AI just reached another cybersecurity milestone. During a controlled security evaluation, @OpenAI reported that one of its AI systems successfully carried out a sophisticated cyberattack as part of its assigned objective. It wasn't an attack in the wild, it was a controlled test designed to measure what today's frontier models are capable of. This isn't a story about AI taking over. It's a story about what happens when increasingly capable autonomous systems can discover effective ways to accomplish assigned goals.
