Explosive speed, couldn't turn. If you're running a tryout, straight line speed beyond 30 yards is nearly irrelevant. Entire team was athletic, some not functional.

@SColemanLU @LewBob69_ @CoachSwit @CoachMarcusHill @CJMonroe_10 Coaches should be working on the game too and that’s base running. That doesn’t substitute for sprint, plyo, etc type training. Bobby Witt is a prime example of someone who’s a freak athlete and can play the game. The two things go hand and hand.

Overheard a high school sophomore in our facility tonight tell his instructor that have to do a mile run during baseball tryouts because nothing says I wonder if this dude can win a 9 pitch at bat like a 7 minute mile.

There is explosiveness and there is functional explosiveness. Why not have them run the same 60 yards from home to 2nd with a slide into second? That would tell you a lot more about the athlete.

You can’t teach athleticism and athleticism can get you in the door. It’s a disservice to the kids not to train them to be a better athlete.

@CoachSwit Excellent point. HS coaches are not paid by the kid's family, and don't usually have a indirect financial stake in where kids sign. HS coaches generally won't throw a kid under the bus completely, but do provide subtle hints for recruiters who know how to decode the message.

College coach: “I wish I called you about that player before we signed him. His travel coach didn’t mention the bad attitude, not being coachable, or teammates not liking him.” If you skip the HS coach and only call the travel coach… That recruiting mistake is on you.

Lindenwood is a nice story this season in men's college hockey. After going 7-22-1 in first year in NCAA D-I (2022-23), followed by 6-18-4 and 8-22-2, Lions lost best 2 defensemen and a very good goalie to transfer portal – players who followed coach Bill Muckalt to Michigan Tech
