I see everyone arguing about the High speed rail. And most of those arguments ignore facts and are clearly partisan. They’re selling high-speed rail as a $60–90B project. Bullshit! 90% of megaprojects go over budget. California HSR? Quoted $33B, actually $120B+. UK HSR? Billions over and still climbing. Toronto LRT? Years late, billions over. This is going cost $2,500–$4,000 per Canadian. And who will use it? Primarily a corridor between Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City. Now the part they forget to mention. Even optimistic projections show 40–60 years to see a return. That’s assuming strong ridership, no major overruns, no delays. Reality? Most high-speed rail systems never make the money back invested and require ongoing public subsidies. So we’re borrowing tens of billions… to build something a portion of the country uses… that will never pay for itself… and in all likelihood cost 100s of millions a year to operate. This is not a smart investment. Someone stands to make a lot of money from this and it’s not everyday Canadians.

@DaneLloydMP They build caribou crossings so the pipelines don't affect migration. But the high speed rail will result in dozens of hundreds of roads being dead-ended affecting fire and ambulance response times.

Do you understand the difference between a pipeline and high speed rail? My constituents continue to farm on top of the transmountain pipeline. They still own the land. Folks along the proposed Alto rail line cant say the same.

There are about 22 million taxpayers in Canada. A $90 billion high-speed rail train would cost every single taxpayer $4,000. Just build. And that’s if it doesn’t go over budget. Before operating subsidies. The vast majority of those taxpayers would never set foot on it.

Good to see Calgary's only Liberal MP thinks Calgary families should be forced to pay $8,000 each to help easterners get from Toronto to Montreal slower than you can fly - the same easterners who won't let us build a pipeline that doesn't even need any taxpayer funding.

But they already know a good chunk of that will be funneled back into their party's coffers, because it's going to areas the liberals have held seats in for a long time more than not... so economic benefit in those areas means more seats for longer. More economic benefit means more donations from those areas too. More donations means better campaigns which means more victories. It's a game of politics, when you follow the money
