🇯🇵 WHY JAPAN HAS BEEN HOARDING OIL LIKE A DOOMSDAY PREPPER FOR YEARS It produces almost no oil, yet somehow Japan sits on the third-largest strategic oil reserve on Earth. Japan imports roughly 90–95% of its energy, and most of it sails thousands of miles from the Middle East through the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most stress-inducing shipping lane. Knowing the impact on its economy if that chokepoint shuts, Tokyo did something radical: it prepared. Over decades Japan quietly built a national oil stash so massive it can keep the country running for months if imports stop. Government reserves, corporate stockpiles, and joint storage deals with oil exporters, a three-layer backup plan that basically turns the country into a giant emergency fuel tank. And now it’s paying off. With tensions in the Middle East rattling markets, Japan just announced it’s releasing some of that oil to stabilize prices and keep supply flowing. Turns out when you run a massive industrial economy with zero domestic oil, the strategy is pretty simple, hoard it.
