My daughter played 2 mins vs USC… She ran at 6am that morning She shot over 500 3’s the day before She did PT after and ice bathed After the game, she got in the sauna and ran 2 miles to offset lack of game run. Staying ready is a mindset. It’s not for the weak minded. It’s for the dedicated who see a bigger future ahead and the few that believe they can do the job when called upon. If your coach holds you accountable, you are VERY fortunate. A lot of coaches accept their players doing whatever they want, whenever they want with no consequences. Discipline/responsibility/accountability are life prep! If your coach cares that much, you’re lucky so respect it!

Sometimes it’s not the player. It’s not the coach. It’s not their peers. The problem is the pressure they’re getting from parents. Don’t criticize. Don’t berate, belittle or embarrass them. What they need from you the most is support. Just be there. The rest takes care of itself.

Basketball is the best game in the world because you get what you earn! Being bigger, faster, and stronger doesn’t win games. Talent is less than half of the equation. The toughest team always wins. The most connected, the most disciplined, and the team with the most grit cuts down nets in March.

A high school basketball team with five great athletes isn't the same as a *team* of five great teammates. Athletes chase stats. Teammates chase wins.

Why Coaching Is Harder Than People Think (A Holiday Reminder)… Because coaching isn’t just about plays, drills, or game nights. It’s about people. It’s about walking into practice every day and managing emotions you didn’t create but are responsible for. Your own. Your players. Your assistants. Parents. Administrators. Fans. It’s about teaching kids who are all at different stages. Different maturity levels. Different confidence levels. Different home situations. And somehow holding them to the same standards while still meeting them where they are. It’s about decisions that look simple from the stands but feel heavy from the sideline. Who plays. When. Why. How you communicate it. And how that decision might land on a 16-year-old who ties their identity to minutes. It’s about losing sleep over kids who won’t buy in. Over conversations you need to have. Over mistakes you replay in your head long after everyone else moved on. It’s about being judged by people who see the outcome, not the process. The scoreboard, not the hours. The result, not the relationships. And yet, you show up again. You plan. You teach. You model. You care. As the season slows and the holidays arrive, this is the reminder: What you do matters. Even when it goes unseen. Even when it feels heavy. Even when it’s hard. Coaching is about influence. And influence lasts longer than any season. That’s why coaching is harder than people think.
