📷SOAS NEWS📷 📷WHSCT survey of patients evidences strong public wish to keep emergency surgery at SWAH📷 📷 Western Trust collated this information - BUT have they put it in the public domain? 📷 RQIA made a recommendation which required the Western Trust to actively gather and use patient feedback as part of safety and quality improvement. Patients were asked what improvements they would suggest for Emergency General Surgery Services and for any further comments. These are the responses the WHSCT reported: 📷Long ED wait times (both hospitals) 📷Desire to have emergency surgery remain at SWAH 📷Concern for staff - comments suggesting wards are understaffed and staff under pressure 📷Acknowledgement of care 📷Travel times from SWAH to Altnagelvin. 📷SOAS NEWS📷 📷3 hour waits for 999 Emergencies - NIAS target is 18mins. 📷 📷Fermanagh & Tyrone patients at risk due to NIAS delays📷 SOAS research has discovered that current NIAS times to reach 999 patients in genuine emergency situations is undoubtedly putting lives at risk. SOAS highlight that instead of 18 minutes, patients are now waiting an average of 180 minutes –3 hours – for an ambulance. to arrive. Category 2 calls are serious emergencies like heart attacks, strokes and patients needing emergency surgery – these should have an ambulance with the patient in 18 minutes . Rural communities - especially those in Fermanagh and Tyrone - are waiting the longest of all. Lives are being destroyed. Funding a safe emergency surgery service at SWAH is essential if care in the West is to be safe. Health Minister, Mike Nesbitt must act now.

this is an admission of harm being evidwenced. However, WHO has the #accountability #responsibility to mitigate for our lives? @healthdpt @publichealthni @RQIANews . The ultimate harm caused is death. Our people desere better. we demand better. Our Health bodies must be clearly aware tha we will not step down. Important Information. Today, the @NIAS999 were presenting material to the Assembly Health Committee today. @niahealth Notably the Chief Executive (interim) Maxine Patterson made no reference to the DoubleED which SWAH patients have to face, nor to any of our families who wait for days to get transferred to Altnagelvin to be seen by a surgeon… However - NIAS stated very clearly- importantly : 🛑Evidence shows harm begins in an hour. 🚑 🛑that minutes make a difference.🚑 We are in a uniquely poor position. We must NOT die due to our postcode. @NIHRC @RuralCommNet We must not allow patient harm to be accepted nor indeed out outcomes further compromised! It sums up some issues, Alan, but it doesn’t sum up the worst case scenario, which is for our postcode. The consequences of removing surgical emergencies from our hospital have been felt through all the community in all sorts of services. FALLS gone. …. And the worst cases of delayed discharge are those in rural Border area areas

@mlchealth @BBCNewsNI @BelfastTrust The Western trust have lost services. Not specifically all four older people. We have lost FALLS service. The only County in Northern Ireland to have lost this. @NIAS999 are aware of this. OPALS was essential.

Breaking - Gp’s tell @BBCNewsNI that a service for older people @BelfastTrust has effectively collapsed. It follows the trust apologising to older patients after cancelling appointments, existing, new or follow up referrals to psychiatry of old age service. More on @BBCNewsNI

@DrLKVaughan Louella it’s always very strange to pay the same taxes to be predisposed to the same health issues in our demographic but to get so many less of the services offered. The disadvantages are huge living in the most isolated corner of Northern Ireland in Fermanagh

For perspective, there are 220 acute hospitals in England. Average 46 calls per hospital over 16 months. A call every 2-3 weeks per hospital. For the >8M acute admissions to those hospitals, care changed for only 3,457 pts or 0.024% of pts.

👉Our campaign is now resolutely focussed on making the case for funding for a newly commissioned emergency surgery at SWAH. That is a matter for the Health Minister and NI Executive.👈 👉That said we have been contacted by supporters who asked us to address the recent recycled statistics claiming that our having to travel to Altnagevlin for life-saving surgery in an emergency is actually safer than travelling to SWAH.👈 👉These were comprehensively addressed by SOAS chair Jimmy Hamill in his appearance before the Stormont health committee.👈 #Data #patientoutcomes #statisticallyinvalid. #RAMI
