AU Commission Press Statement on US-Iran Military Escalation. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf is deeply concerned by the reported military strikes carried out by the United States in coordination with Israeli forces against targets inside the Islamic Republic of Iran, an escalation that marks a serious intensification of hostilities in the Middle East. The Chairperson calls for restraint, urgent de-escalation, and sustained dialogue, stressing that all parties must act fully in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter to safeguard international peace and security. The Chairperson warns that further escalation threatens to worsen global instability, with serious implications for energy markets, food security, and economic resilience—particularly in Africa, where conflict and economic pressures remain acute. He urges all concerned actors to prioritise diplomatic engagement, including ongoing international mediation efforts facilitated by the Sultanate of Oman, to prevent further deterioration and uphold the international rules-based order. Today at AU Headquarters, on behalf of the AUC Chairperson, I received H.E Ambassador Tatyana Dovgalenko, Director of Partnerships at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation @mfa_russia, together with H.E. Anyways the 39 AU summit concluded in Addis Ababa. Let me summarize what happened and the main discussions that happened: 1. the adoption of a landmark resolution recognizing Slavery and Colonialism as Crimes Against Humanity. For decades, reparations were treated as an activist dream; now, they are an official AU Strategy.A draft resolution will be presented to the UN General Assembly, demanding global recognition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade as the "gravest crime against humanity". Each AU country was urged to establish National Reparations Commissions to formally engage with former colonial powers for historical justice. 2.The AU Commission signed a partnership with Google during the summit to advance Africa’s Sovereign AI and Digital Capacity. The plan is to train 3 million students and public officials to ensure AI models are built with African data and African values, rather than just importing Western software 3. There was a massive diplomatic push regarding Sudan. the summit affirmed that Sudan can re-engage with IGAD and the AU, provided they meet specific humanitarian and ceasefire benchmarks 4. the AU officially declared 2026 as the "Year of Sustainable Water and Sanitation." The AU is pushing for massive investments in unlocking Africa’s underground aquifers. 5. A new committee under AFCFTA of 7 Heads of State, chaired by President William Ruto, was inaugurated to specifically hunt down "non-tariff barriers": the hidden taxes and border delays that still make intra-African trade difficult. 6. The rotating presidency of the AU passed to Burundi : President Évariste Ndayishimiye.
