Let’s talk about things that makes building a blockchain complicated and actually affects how fast, safe, and fair blockchain systems (like Bitcoin and Ethereum) can be. There’s this concept called the “𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗺𝗮.” In simple terms, it says: A blockchain can’t fully have all three at the same time: •𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (no central control) •𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 (safe from hacks and manipulation) •𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 (fast and efficient) Most systems today are forced to pick two and compromise on the third. 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟑 1. 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: it gives Power to the People This means no single authority controls the system. Instead, many independent computers (nodes) run it together. Why it matters: •No single point of failure •Harder to attack •More fair and transparent But the problem is The more people involved, the harder it becomes to keep everything fast and coordinated. 2. 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆: Keeping the System Safe Security ensures no one can cheat the system, double-spend money, or break the rules. Threats to security include: •Hackers attacking nodes •Nodes going offline •Groups colluding to manipulate the system Strong security usually requires more checks, more communication, and more validation, which slows things down. 3. 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Speed & Efficiency This is about how fast transactions happen and how many can be processed at once. A good scalable system should: •Handle lots of users •Keep fees low •Confirm transactions quickly But Faster systems often cut decentralization or security to achieve that speed. The trilemma exists because improving one area usually affects another: •More decentralization cuz slower performance •To have More speed you’ll need fewer validators (less decentralization) •More security leads to more checks and slower system So blockchain developers have been stuck asking: “What do we sacrifice?”
