Yesterday, the @Interior announced $50 million in subsidence repair funding for the San Luis Canal in the California Aqueduct. This critical water infrastructure serves both the State Water Project (SWP) and Central Valley Project (CVP), and this additional funding will restore delivery capabilities and improve water reliability. Thanks to this federal funding and the funding from Senator McNerney’s proposed SB 872, subsidence repairs can be made to avoid the projected 87% reduction in the SWP’s delivery capability in the coming years without burdening ratepayers. Yesterday, SWC joined Northern and Southern California legislators, along with groups like @RestoretheDelta, in a rare unifying occasion in California Water to support Sen. McNerney’s bill, SB 872, Protecting CA’s Water. SB 872 would safeguard the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta and the State Water Project by directing a combined $300 million annually toward levee repairs in the Delta and subsidence repairs to SWP canals south of the Delta. SWC is proud to support this bill and partner with a diverse coalition that shares the goal of protecting California’s water. Watch the press conference here: sd05.senate.ca.gov/news/videos. Did you know subsidence threatens California’s water reliability, affordability and climate resilience? Without action, subsidence can further degrade our state’s primary water delivery system. You may have heard of the term subsidence but what does it mean? Subsidence is the sinking of land which can be caused by various factors including groundwater pumping. In California, subsidence has been documented for over a century and is a growing issue that impacts our water infrastructure and the communities who rely on it. The placement of solar panels on top of canals has been proposed to reduce evaporation, generate clean energy and improve water quality, but there's much to consider. Studies like a 2021 UC Merced Study and the @CA_DWR-sponsored Project Nexus study may guide the viability of solar panels on California's canal systems – including the State Water Project and Central Valley Project. SWC Energy Manager Jonathan Young looked at the results of these studies, highlighting that these solar panels may be beneficial under specific and limited circumstances, but in many cases, these solar panels may bring financial, operational, maintenance and safety challenges. FACT: The Delta Conveyance Project will help to offset future losses in water deliveries due to climate change while maintaining water quality and fishery protections. To call this an “increase” in water deliveries is simply untrue and misleading. Corrections to common myths and misunderstandings about the Delta Conveyance Project can be found in this factsheet.
