#COP30 fell short - and missed the opportunity to truly shift from negotiation to implementation. While the new just transition mechanism (the so-called BAM), the information integrity declaration, and voluntary actions on fossil fuel phase out were welcome, the outcome ultimately didn't deliver enough for those on the frontlines of the climate crisis.
But mayors will not slow down. We're delivering ambitious, inclusive climate action now. The world needs to follow the pace of cities.

🍃 @BreatheCities mayors showed how the initiative helps them turn data and community action into cleaner air for all.
From London’s clean air zone to Rio’s plan to electrify 30% of buses by 2030, cities prove progress is unstoppable.

Cities are leading the way in showing that it’s possible to clean the air, fast.
Yesterday we heard from the Mayors driving change across @BreatheCities at our #WMS25 session 👇
- Deputy Mayor Mete Coban MBE on how #London’s bold clean air action has lowered NO2 to safe levels 184 years earlier than projected.
- Mayor Trzakowski on how #Warsaw has eliminated 90% of coal ‘smoker’ stoves for domestic heating, driving healthier homes.
- Mayor Galan (Alcaldía Mayor de Bogotá) shared #Bogota’s plans to expand their electric bus fleet, and declare a second clean air zone - action that has seen them recognised as an #EarthshotPrize finalist.
- Mayor Dada Morero reflected on how #Johannesburg has partnered with over 1,000 of the city's young people to drive awareness around tackling dirty air, together.
- Mayor Vassil Terziev highlighted how residents in #Sofia are switching to cleaner heating methods, protecting public health and lowering bills.
I loved moderating this panel and left energised and optimistic after hearing from these Mayors alongside the wonderful @sabrodrigues61, @anthawilliams and @DrMariaNeira.
With deep thanks to @BloombergDotOrg for the vision and support in making #BreatheCities possible, and to @c40cities for our partnership in turning ambition into action across our cities.

C40’s Executive Director @MarkWatts_ celebrated the progress cities have made and said what must come next to reach 2030 targets.
“Thanks to the tremendous leadership in this room and efforts by people living in C40 cities, emissions across C40 cities are now falling despite growing populations and economies.”

I am excited by the energy at the Local Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Cities around the world are cooperating on climate across national borders, demonstrating innovative solutions, and building trust and solidarity.
Today I asked mayors and local leaders to;
📌Continue to over deliver on their climate plans to keep 1.5 within reach.
📌Use their voices and political influence to defend and drive climate ambition.
📌Build bridges and work together to realise the just energy transition.
Local leaders deserve more than a seat at the table. They deserve formal recognition in the global climate process. The UN gives them its full support. #COP30 #WMS25

G20 Ministers have adopted the Cape Town Ministerial Declaration on Air Quality, committing to stronger monitoring, cooperation, and action to reduce short-lived climate pollutants—improving air quality, public health, and climate outcomes. The Declaration marks the first time air pollution has been elevated to the top of the G20 forum’s global agenda, signaling growing international recognition of its links to climate and health.
Ministers also welcomed the South African Presidency’s commitment to convene a technical workshop to continue discussions on air quality among G20 Members, on a voluntary basis, to facilitate knowledge exchange and promote collective progress.

When @SadiqKhan was first elected in 2016, experts said it would take 193 years to bring London’s air within legal limits.
Thanks to ULEZ and other transformative policies, we’ve done it in just 9 YEARS !

In 2019, Kings College London estimated that without additional action it would take 193 years for London to meet legal air pollution limits. Today, new air quality data from @DefraGovUK shows that this aim has been achieved in just nine years!
