Last January’s fatal DCA crash was preventable. It’s why I authored the bipartisan ROTOR Act. It mandates that all aircraft have ADS-B technology and have it turned on, so that other aircrafts and ATCs can monitor location in realtime. It passed the Senate unanimously, and I’m confident the House will pass it to put on President Trump’s desk in January.

I’m grateful to Senator Cruz, Senator Cantwell, Senator Moran, and other Senate leaders for passing the ROTOR Act, which will increase communication protocol between aircraft. Since the horrific tragedy in January, the FAA & USDOT have taken a number of steps —including eliminating helicopter and fixed-wing mixed traffic near DCA — to make the skies above our nation’s capital safer. This important legislation is built on that progress and we look forward to working with Congress to make our airspace the envy of the world.

Let me be clear: section 373 of NDAA - because it is law - would override safety measures @SecDuffy put in place following the Jan. 29 midair collision, following issuance of our urgent safety recommendations, including ADSB requirements for so-called training missions like check rides. This is an absolute travesty.
