What an amazing opportunity to be able to spearhead this project! Really enabled by the collaborative NIBR environment, a unique framework from the innovation postdoc fellowship, and top notch scientific mentorship.

Thanks so much @Dereklowe for highlighting our paper! I’m so lucky to be part of this fantastic collaboration. Can’t wait to see what @JacobsenLab has coming up!

The heart of the paper was inspired by the @KiesslingGroup’s AWESOME work on C-H pi interactions in glycan recognition, which drive the observed catalyst-controlled regioselectivity. I strongly recommend reading these papers immediately!

@KRHornberger I’ve been wondering what sorts of pharma/biotech positions are open to entry level PhD chemists that don’t require wet chemistry/lab based work?
I love my work in the Pfizer design role, but how common is it outside big pharma? (It’s a frequent question from new grads IMO)

@med_chemist Tecfidera. I’m not sure this exactly fits your definition since the “hit” was fumaric acid described as early as 1959 for MS, which was developed into the drug, dimethyl fumarate, and approved less than a decade ago.

Some good banter in the replies here. Was doing some thinking, and what is the "ugliest" looking hit you've seen developed into a "modern" drug?
I remember this hit that led to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponesimod caught my eye

Breaking News: Pfizer said its pill to treat Covid-19 had been found to be highly effective at preventing severe illness among at-risk people. It appears to be more effective than a similar offering from Merck, which is awaiting U.S. authorization. nyti.ms/2YhCyGE

Researchers report the discovery of PF-07321332, an orally active, small-molecule inhibitor of the #SARSCoV2 main protease, a key viral target. In a phase I clinical trial, it achieved concentrations expected to inhibit the virus based on in vitro studies fcld.ly/gds881n
