There is a strong connection between player development, concept-driven team play, and this excerpt from Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die @drewcarlsonhp @chasmahoney @mc_mcvicar @transformbball @JimHaverstrom @StrideEnvy @ShakeyWaits Plans rarely survive contact—just like rigid drills and set plays in sport and player development. They often create a lack of adaptable players in games, when the opponent “gets a vote.” Ecological Dynamics and CLA allow game performance to emerge through adapting to constraints/the environment, rather than following scripts. Define intent, shape the environment, and let athletes self-organize solutions in real time "LEARNING IS NOT THE PROCESS OF REPEATING A SOLUTION BUT THE PROCESS OF FINDING A SOLUTION"

I was extremely lucky to spend a little time as a kid (12-15 years old) around 'Mr Howe'.. watched his games, had the opportunity to skate during some practices, the locker room, car rides, lunches, etc. learned about 'real' men & 'real' hockey. Need more youtube.com/watch?v=-4dFma…

James Hagens on starting his pro career in Providence: "I love it. Nothing's given, everything's earned. So it's just knowing that you have earn a spot wherever you go. So that's going out there, it's working your hardest. It's trying to show everything you worked for."

Someone alerted me to the fact that the guys on the brilliant 32 Thoughts podcast mentioned the UK's demand for ice rinks, and the sport in general, on this recent episode. Give it a listen UK hockey fans. Thanks @FriedgeHNIC @sportsnetkyle for covering this.

“The people I respect most as teammates are people that can play but don’t need to play. There’s not an emotional tie or something where they wrap their identity around only their individual achievement. It’s more about what they can give for the team,” Winners are givers.

I texted a coach this morning and asked how the new job was going after about a month. His response was one I’ve heard many times… and lived myself: “Not bad. Some kids pushing back culture wise. Always worried about staff and numbers.” If you go into a program and start making the changes that need to be made, be ready for pushback. That’s normal. My advice to him: Water the good grass. Don’t let the weeds hold you hostage. Too many coaches start looking the other way because they want to keep players and coaches happy. They convince themselves they can slowly change the culture. It doesn’t work that way. Culture doesn’t drift in the right direction. It moves toward the standard you enforce. Stay strong to your principles. The right grass will grow. 🌱🏈 @fastnwide

My old teammate Paul Kariya was a left handed shot. He used to shoot hundreds of pucks right handed before practices, almost as hard as he did left. It was incredible. He said it tricked his neural pathways in his brain, made him stronger on his stick and made his core stronger. Looks like Nate is trying it too. Even the best always trying to get better.

KIDS: Dominik Shine's path to his first career NHL goal is incredible: -Four years of junior hockey in the USHL -Comes into college hockey at Northern Michigan as a 20 year old -Doesn't get drafted to the NHL -Plays four years of college hockey before signing a pro contract -Plays 8 years in the AHL before getting a call up to the NHL -Becomes the captain for a first place team in the AHL -In his 9th full professional season, at 32 years old, scores his first NHL goal. Very few players see the results of their hard work in the time they want to see it. Resilience is a super-power, and if this isn't inspiration to keep at your dreams even through the low moments, I don't know what is. Everyone has a different path. Congrats to Dominik Shine on his first career NHL goal!

I couldn’t be prouder of the boys on the U.S. Hockey team for their hard-fought Olympic victory. And I have to give credit where credit’s due: Well-played, Team Canada.
