“the challenge is not simply to understand what these young men believed, but to understand the ecosystem that taught them why they need to believe and how to perform this curriculum of hate. And only then can society begin to dismantle the ethos that sustains it.”
Jacob Ware@Jacob_A_Ware

Really sharp framing from @AmarAmarasingam, calling the terrorist attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego the result of (and an addition to) a far-right "curriculum of violence, which turns attacks into instructional material." @ConversationUS theconversation.com/the-shooting-a…

NYT out with a jaw dropping investigative report on the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. 60 Minutes reported last Sunday on some of this, too. The NYT report is a must-read, the 60 Minutes report should then be watched. 1/3

This is an orchestrated disinformation campaign meant to distract you from the fact that (1) the president and his family are looting government funds by the billions and (2) this administration's policies are bankrupting us, no matter how many dollars might be saved in fraud enforcement. That they also want to blame dark-skinned immigrants while they are at it only makes it more disgraceful. The Vice President is truly reprehensible.
JD Vance@JDVance

Today, the task force and the DOJ announced a massive take down of two of the largest Medicaid fraud cases in Minnesota state history, as well as the largest autism fraud scheme ever charged by the federal government. Our message is simple: if you’re committing fraud, we will find you, and we won’t rest until justice is served.

This New York Times piece is worth your time. Here’s what is happening, as simply as I can put it. Back in January, Trump sued the IRS, an agency he controls, demanding $10 billion over the leak of his tax returns a number of years ago. IRS lawyers did their jobs. They wrote a memo laying out the defenses that could beat the suit, including the fact that Trump filed too late. His own lawyer was in court when the leaker pleaded guilty in October 2023, more than two years before Trump sued. The Justice Department never showed up to court. Never argued back. Never used the defenses sitting on their desk. The judge got suspicious and ordered both sides to explain whether they were actually opposing each other or just colluding. The day before that brief was due, Trump dropped the suit. Same day, his Justice Department announced a $1.776 billion taxpayer-funded “anti-weaponization fund.”  Trump gets a formal apology. The IRS agrees to drop any audits of him and his family, even though a 2024 Times report found a loss in an ongoing audit could cost him over $100 million. The acting Attorney General, Trump’s former criminal defense attorney, picks the five commissioners who decide who gets paid. Trump can fire any of them. Proud Boys and Oath Keepers are not ruled out. This is the most corrupt thing I’ve ever seen from an American president. Where in the hell are my Republican colleagues? nytimes.com/2026/05/19/adm…

Within one 24 hour period, Trump: - got out of a $100 million IRS fine - secured "immunity" from all future tax investigations for his family and friends - created a $1.8 billion slush fund for lawbreaking supporters - was reported for likely insider trading worth nearly $1 billion All of the obvious things to say about this are true. It's bad. Nobody even tries to defend it. The closest thing to a defense you get is something about how "but Democrats suck" and "woke was also bad," which is not a defense, but rather a kind of moral blank check made out to the administration to give them the right to do anything. But what I'm most curious about is whether this sort of lurid corruption creates a countermovement that successfully returns government to rule of law or whether it's establishing a norm of executive imperialism that every future administration will use to achieve its ends, which can always be justified by the moral blank check of "the other side is worse, so let us do whatever we want."

Most people will only see the spin around Trump’s $1.8b settlement fund. But once you walk through the timeline, the level of corruption becomes impossible to dismiss. Read this one all the way through. open.substack.com/pub/joycevance…

Lost in the news this week: the real story behind Palm Beach International becoming Trump International is not the renaming. It is the coercion that produced it and the extraordinary terms hidden inside the deal. County staff told commissioners that refusing would put state transportation funding and grant assurances at risk. DeSantis has already removed state attorneys and school board members who crossed him. That is the climate one Democratic commissioner cast her deciding vote in. And the agreement itself is not a normal honorary naming. The Trump family company retains the right to pick vendors, license the name to third parties, and sell branded merchandise off-site. This is not an honor bestowed as much as it is a shakedown. theguardian.com/us-news/2026/m…

Trump took $59 million from 590,000 Americans for a phone that may never exist. Then quietly updated the terms: “No guarantee a phone will be produced or sold.” The crypto coin. The sneakers. The Bible. The gold card. The ballroom. The phone. Every single time the same pattern. Take the money. Change the terms. Walk away.

Donald Trump just blocked over 150 wind energy projects across America, killing 30 gigawatts of new power generation.  That is enough electricity for nearly 10 million homes. He is doing this while his unauthorized war with Iran sends oil markets into chaos and pushes energy costs higher for every working family in America. Wind already provides 10 percent of our electricity.  It powers Republican states like Texas, Iowa, Oklahoma, and North Dakota. American workers build these projects. American landowners profit from them. American grids depend on them. But Trump told us his goal in January. He said he does not want a single wind project built. Now he is using the Pentagon to make it happen, freezing routine military reviews that companies have relied on for years. We are in an energy crisis. Demand is climbing. Prices are rising. And the President is sabotaging American power production because he thinks turbines are ugly. This is not energy policy. It is a personal grudge dressed up as national security, and families across our nation will pay the price. nytimes.com/2026/05/04/cli…

🇺🇸BREAKING: Someone placed a $920 million crude oil short at 3:40 AM. 70 minutes later Axios reported the US and Iran were close to a deal. Oil dropped 12%. The trade made $125 million in profit. Minutes after that Iran launched the “Persian Gulf Strait Authority” and oil surged 8%. $760 million placed before Trump’s last announcement. $920 million placed before this one. Every major announcement in this war has been front-run by someone who knew it was coming. What kind of war is this? This is more like a trading desk with an army. Never stop connecting the dots.

The amount of epistemic decline in the US Senate is really something to behold. This senator spreads outright disinformation. He claims Germany is on top of list of countries putting restrictions on use of US bases in 🇩🇪for Iran war. Exact opposite is true. Zero restrictions.
Senator Dave McCormick@SenMcCormickPA

America has had Europe’s back for generations. We weren’t asking for troops in Iran, just flyover and refueling rights. Some NATO allies stepped up. Others, like Spain, Italy and Germany, fell short. @POTUS is right to be frustrated.

The USA has not only ceased being leader of the free world, it has ceased being a member of the free world. It betrays democratic allies and supports expansionist dictatorships. The only question Americans need to ask themselves is do they want this to continue?

Farmer Bankruptcies: Trump vs. Biden Years Here’s a clear data comparison from U.S. Courts & American Farm Bureau Federation: Trump First Term: • 2019: 595–599 (highest in over a decade) • 2020: ~560 Biden Years: • 2022: 169 (lowest since 2005) • 2023: 139 (near 20-year low) Recent: • 2024: 216 (+55% from 2023) • 2025: 315 (+46% from 2024) Key takeaway: Filings spiked under Trump’s first term (trade wars + low prices played roles), hit historic lows mid-Biden era, and have risen again recently — but 2025 remains well below the 2019 peak. Farm bankruptcies are just one indicator of stress due to issues like commodity prices, debt, costs, and weather. Trends don’t start/stop at inauguration day.

@275deQI @issra_spacebean @i3ubz @IlkleyJohn @Reuters Of course it’s not in the headline, it wasn’t part of a terrorist attack. It was a dispute with a former friend. Disputes between acquaintances, turning violent don’t make the news let alone a headline. Terrorist attacks are entirely different.
