I personally spent the entire morning calling White House staffers, begging them to intervene and urge the President to deploy the National Guard. Every single one of them was terrified and confused by his inaction. They couldn’t understand why he continued tweeting about Mike Pence instead of acting—fueling the chaos as the situation spiraled. If you can, I recommend reading Ivan Turgenev's "The Execution of Tropmann," a short story that gives a first-hand account of the cruel barbarity of public executions and the moral sickness of the voyeurs. It's one of the first pieces of writing that really moved me.
