Here's the dirty little secret. The US Navy could have easily re-opened the Strait of Hormuz at any time. But a closed Strait put pressure on China. Now we are learning China pressured Iran to re-open the Strait. Trump is the master of leverage.

I had a very interesting exchange yesterday with a pro-Palestinian guy, about the war in Iran. I pointed out that Iran was continuously and deliberately targeting Israeli civilians with cluster munitions, which is a war crime. He scoffed and argued that Israel used cluster munitions itself in Lebanon and Gaza, which was new to me. I said that I condemn the use of cluster munitions by all sides, and under all circumstances. I asked him whether he would join me in this condemnation, which he declined. He said (and I’m paraphrasing here) that Iran has the right to retaliate in any way it sees fit, including by targeting Israeli civilians. He then gave me a long list of alleged Israeli human rights violations over the years. But I ended the discussion right there and then. You know why? Because I won’t be lectured about human rights violations by someone who denies my own human rights. I’m done playing this game, in which only Western nations are expected to uphold human rights, while their rivals are exempt. If only one side is committed to human rights, it’s like fighting with two hands tied behind your back. This is exactly what the enemies of the West are interested in. They know that they are no match to the US militarily, and so they weaponize the concept of human rights, and turn it into a strategic advantage. This is how you get terrorists shooting missiles out of a schoolyard or a hospital, using their own population as human shields. They know that Western nations would be reluctant to shoot at civilian targets, and that if they do retaliate, Western media would have a field day. I say - fuck that. Only people who respect the rights of ALL human beings (and believe it or not, that includes Jews), deserve to invoke the concept of human rights. If you deny the human rights of any group of people, you have forfeited any right to opine on the matter. You are nothing but a cynical propagandist, exploiting the values of a civilization greater than your own. @Satoufi_
