This is another one that breaks my heart.💔 It breaks for Adrienne, who gave this place forty years and was told, in 2021, that it had been saved. Then they closed her restaurant and her home, citing safety. Now they're calling this development the plan to protect it too. It breaks for the falcons and the eagles nesting on those cliffs, who never got a vote in any of it. For the trees that might get bulldozed for a lodge nobody living there asked for. But strip away the word "protection" and look at what's actually on the page. Visitors spending $3.8 million a year. Nearly a million dollars in annual tax revenue. That's the real plan. Not saving a lake. Cashing it in. And here's the part that can't be undone. Once this land is developed, it doesn't go back to wild. Not in our lifetimes. Not until long after we're gone. You can build a lodge in ten years. You cannot rebuild forty years of quiet, or five thousand years of an untouched shoreline, once it's gone. If this were really about protecting the lake, would the plan be measured in dollars, or in what's still standing?

In 2021, it took $8.5 million, the largest deal of its kind, and a coalition of conservation groups to save Sweetwater Lake from private developers. Gov. Polis stood on a cliff above the lake, across from nesting raptors, and announced it as Colorado's 43rd state park. 🦅 Five years later, the Forest Service's plan to "manage" that same wild, remote land is a $45 million buildout that looks a lot like what they saved it from. Adrienne Brink has guided horse trips out of Sweetwater Lake since 1984. For decades, her restaurant and lodge were the heart of that community. Everyone who camped, rode, or just stopped in for a sandwich knew her. Then the Forest Service acquired the land and closed her restaurant and employee housing, citing safety issues. Her livelihood, gone almost overnight. Now the same agency wants to spend $45 million rebuilding a version of what she ran, and taking it over themselves. A new lodge with a store, a bigger campground, up to 12 cabins, a full equestrian center. A decade of construction, bulldozers cutting into cliffs, wetlands, and shoreline that have gone largely untouched, right where bald eagles and peregrine falcons nest. The forest supervisor admitted on the record that there's "a little bit of a difference of opinion" about whether any of this even meets the agency's own wildlife protection standards. And once it's built, there's still only one way in and out. 11.7 miles of narrow canyon road, prone to mudslides and rockslides. Last August, the Derby Fire proved what that means. Firefighters had to evacuate the area themselves, because there was no second way out. Summerlin, spokesperson for the Sweetwater Working Group, put it simply: "It's not a matter of if they're gonna get trapped up there, it's a matter of when." Brink watched all of this coming. "The Forest Service led us to believe this would all be possible," she said. "Now it appears it was a deception from the beginning." Who do you trust more to protect this lake: the woman who built its community for forty years, or the agency that took her livelihood and kept the blueprint? #DemsUnited
