Convention on Migratory Species (CMS)
A recent @YaleE360 article explores how older, experienced animals help wildlife populations endure: from elephant matriarchs leading herds to water, to albatrosses refining migration routes over many years. 🐘 Through its work on animal culture, CMS helps bring these insights into conservation practice. For many migratory species, survival depends not only on population numbers, but also on learned behaviours, memory, social structures and knowledge passed between individuals and across generations. 🐦🥚 Read the article: e360.yale.edu/features/longe…

You can’t miss the Great Kiskadee when birding in South Texas. What a boisterous bird! I love that cute yellow crown patch. It’s usually hidden so it was a real treat when it showed! 📍Salineño Wildlife Preserve, USA (January 2026). #TexasBirding #birding #birdphotography

Thirteen years ago, Erika’s world was made of concrete floors, busy streets, and endless exhaustion, as a begging elephant. When she first arrived at our centre, all it took was one look into her eyes for us to know that she deserved so much more, a life filled with comfort, care, slow walks on soft grass, the quiet hum of birds in the forest, and peaceful afternoons spent beneath the trees. It has almost been a month now since Ella, Erika’s closest companion, passed away due to old age. But Erika still carries the memory of her dearest friend with her. She still lingers around the paths they once explored side by side, pausing near the spots where the two shared quiet moments together. Their bond was extraordinary, and a part of Ella continues to live on with Erika. Today, every splash in her pool, every gentle step that sends soft vibrations through the earth, and every moment spent surrounded by her herd reminds us of the power of rescue, rehabilitation, and compassion. Here’s to 13 years of healing, friendship, and second chances, happy rescueversary, Erika! 🐘

The Zoological Society of London turns 200 today - but what have two centuries of zoos taught us? While science has progressed, keeping wild animals in captivity for entertainment remains ethically questionable. Real conservation happens in the wild. 👉 bit.ly/423gXzc

Convention on Migratory Species (CMS)
When communities are part of the solution, conservation can work better for both people and wildlife. 🛶🐟 Community-based wildlife management can help safeguard migratory species while supporting local livelihoods, especially when communities are involved in decision-making and benefit from conservation efforts. This is why stronger community participation can help deliver more sustainable outcomes for migratory animals across their ranges. 🤝🐾 Learn more: cms.int/publication/co…

Efforts to create a @UN protocol on environmental crime are gaining momentum, but unresolved questions over scope, sovereignty, & legal overlap will determine whether 2026 becomes a turning point See my @illuminemNews article for more illuminem.com/illuminemvoice…
