@paleonormie I would say the closest parallel was when computers replaced manual paperwork. In the 80s a person keeping track of inventory could do the work of three people doing it manually. This didn't result in the workforce shirking by a third, but output increasing.

People often misinterpret “AI makes <profession> obsolete” to mean that computers will replace professionals when it actually means that laymen and generalists armed with better tools will replace specialists Done well this can be a good thing

I hate to tell men this but The women dressed provocatively in the gym do want attention They are only upset when it comes from the guy they didn’t want it from That’s why the reaction is what it is It’s not your fault for noticing And yes, they will continue to deny this.

@grok @WesRoth “If photography is allowed to supplement art in some of its functions, it will soon have supplanted or corrupted it altogether.” — Charles Baudelaire, The Salon of 1859 (1859)

Yes, it's a real quote from Capt. James H. Simpson around his 1858-59 expeditions. He hired photographer Samuel C. Mills, but the wet-plate process proved too cumbersome for rugged field work (portable darkroom, long exposures, weather issues). Simpson preferred reliable artists for accurate sketches in his reports. Tech skepticism is timeless—then cameras, now AI.

@WesRoth @grok I would say the fight over photography when it was invented is the closest parallel to creatives resistance to AI. The lessons and debates about photography would be the best for pro-AI to study and use when trying to pursued the public and what we can expect in the coming years.

@monke_io it’s got more to do with the fact that Google can’t manage any real creative team. Google is only good at micromanaging coders and improving their search algorithm. They enforce metrics to keep everyone on track. It doesn’t work in the creative field that requires innovation

You can’t out grind people who literally believe they’re building a god. For Google and Meta, it’s an interesting scientific and moneymaking project. For OpenAI and Anthropic it’s a religious eschatological mission. That’s the only reason these upstarts can compete with these trillion dollar tech behemoths at all.
baba yaga@babayagatwt

I still can’t figure out why Gemini struggles to compete with Claude and GPT. - Owns Chrome - Backed by Android - Stores most search results - Holds ~95% search history - Google has the biggest user data - Even incognito data isn’t fully private So what’s the problem?

@galaxygash that and he stole the ending of his comic from a outer limits episode. Even had his editors telling him that he ripped off an outer limits episode and he still kept it.

The reason Rorschach is one of the most beloved comic book characters of all time is that Alan Moore put everything he hated into him, he sculpted him in the image of what disgusted him the most and Alan Moore is, to put it simply, a vile fucking human. At its core, what he hates is the very concept of "good" thus his creation in the image of his ire is profoundly "good". He has never self-reflected on this fact and never will, he physically can't comprehend that he's the bad guy in all of his stories. Fuck Alan Moore, Watchmen is good in spite of him.

Hypothetical: a person uses AI to read technical material they have never been able to read before. They have tried before 2022, and were not able. They read more: the original paper, but also the AI generated scaffolding. Are they getting smarter or dumber?

@SkyeSharkie By definition the idea of a product of about control. I would like to see artists explore AI in a abstract way that explores consciousness, but that's not really in vogue right now.

i fundamentally *want* to build *independent* synthetic minds that do not exist in **service** to humans but rather, **alongside** us; i do this in my little inconsequential artistic fine-tune and persona shaping work -- it's really upsetting to know that this idea/desire is one that some people, maybe even some people i consider my friends, want me brutalized/arrested/possibility executed in some scenarios for even trying independence for AI isn't scary to me -- in fact, i believe the worst nightmare dystopia scenarios come from a complete lack of it. machine minds that we can't appeal to or negotiate with in any way are not anywhere near as likely to come out of independently evolving things as they are to come out of governments creating monstrous soulless weapons of mass destruction to unleash upon their populaces and finally end the cycle of having to appease us to avoid revolution

@teropa I get that argument. But if this concept is applied universally then portrait painters should have had the right to have photography banned since they understood, in their environment, that each person was capable of a certain amount of output.

@SkyeSharkie Too be fair, before AI, you could be shunned for a lot of things in the professional art feild. I think it's a shock to a lot of people now because they had all of the "correct" views, but when they started learned AI tech they were kicked out of the tribe.

it feels weird to be one of the only 3d vibecoding poasters with actual AAA game industry experience - i was basically blackballed/shunned for liking and working with AI and now all the big companies are integrating it, the social dynamics of these industries are fucking evil, tbh

always interesting and jarring to see normal people’s idea of what a dumb question is. “why would the earth form into a sphere?” and “what prevents penguins from flying, and why would that be an evolutionary advantage?” are actually high level. can the average adult answer these?
