making a wife-sized emotional commitment to a woman who could not reciprocate it, for reasons outside of my control, is the worst decision i ever made however i also loved her so it’s hard to holistically regret it’s been well over a year and still feels confusing, painful

While doing practices that increase openheartedness (eg metta, gratitude), you typically intend to grow collectedness on those sensations. When there are blocks to that growth, typical instruction is to point the practice towards that block. It can work, but it also can reinforce non-acceptance of those blocks which reduces conductivity, or overall okayness with what's present When that happens, I find it's more helpful to shift into an "acknowledgment" practice. This can be done at various levels of conceptual scaffolding, from simply "hanging out" in curiosity with the stuckness to a somatic dialogue practice like Core Transformation, IFS, Sedona Method, EK. The trap here is getting caught up "in" the emotional stuff rather than returning to the process-level openhearted practice that deepens collectedness. With skill, one can directly point a laser beam of attention onto those stuck sensations and the "acknowledgement" happens subperceptually, immediately dissolving tension into more okayness! The typical way I've mostly seen brahmavihara practice taught is to overlay these wholesome qualities on your experience, and that if you're not feeling the metta, for example, to then send more metta, or have metta for the fact that you're not feeling metta. That has a place, but a downside of that approach is it can be reinforcing you to not listen to your emotional state and what wants to show up now; to not listen to yourself, but defer to someone else telling you how you should feel. Easy pitfall.

Evidence is emerging that GLP-1s like Ozempic, Tirzapeptide and Retatutride not only suppress your appetite, but also your desire, your futile grasping, your romantic attachment. We can turn the whole world Buddhist with these drugs. They should be pumped into the water supply.

There’s a meditation I like to do sometimes called “suffering meditation.” This may not sound appealing but the output can be very beautiful. It works by simply sitting still and inviting all your unconscious or repressed suffering into consciousness. The core of the meditation sits in this intent: an attitude of welcoming invitation towards feelings of pain and suffering. Then noticing them when they arrive. Holding them in awareness. And just lending your pain and suffering the light of your consciousness. Then offering it space to unfold however they wish to unfold. A few notable things I notice about suffering when I allow myself to simply hold it in this way: - My thinking mind goes very peaceful, revealing that most thoughts are simply attempts to block out suffering - Many sufferings - especially emotional ones - cease to feel like suffering when held without resistance, revealing that the suffering is often *made out of* resistance - Unconscious sufferings hold a lot of energy and bringing them into awareness can actually be very energizing as a result. - When I bring them into consciousness and let them unfold, my sufferings often eventually transform into beautiful light. At the end of this meditation my visual field will often be literally filled with beautiful flickering white light. It is this last point that always feels most profound to me. That suffering is often made of light and energy that is just temporarily bent in the wrong shape. Sometimes the process of this meditation feels like simply letting all the trapped light inside me rise and express itself. I call it “suffering meditation” but I could equally call it “light meditation.” All the light we seek is trapped in the darkness of our suffering.

There’s no such thing as negative emotions. Seemingly negative emotions are just beautiful energies that have lost their way. We can transform apparently negative emotions back into beautiful energies simply by welcoming them fully back into consciousness. Unconsciousness is like darkness for emotions. They cannot see where they’re going. Consciousness is the light of the emotional world. When an emotion comes into full consciousness, it can once again see where it’s going. When it can see where it’s going, it transforms effortlessly into its beautiful form on its own. All we need to do is give it light and space. In many ways, emotions are like plants. If we leave them in the dark, they will shrivel up and die. If we give them light, they will flourish and bloom into beautiful flowers. The art of creating a beautiful mind does not lie in painting over ugly emotions with beautiful ones. It lies in creating the conditions for everything that superficially appears ugly to unravel into its full beauty.

Last week, I joined the @jhanatech retreat and had one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. I genuinely didn’t realize the mind was capable of this depth, or that meditation could feel this powerful and life-changing. Jhourney is an eight-day retreat (both in-person and online) with a clear goal: helping you enter jhana states. TL;DR I’ve spent years working on myself: CBT and IFS therapy, clinical ketamine therapy, the Hoffman Process, silent meditation retreats. All of them helped in real ways. None of them affected me like this did. I’ve struggled for a long time with self-worth, social anxiety, and imposter syndrome. This retreat gave me the most practical and reliable tool I’ve found for working with those parts of myself. I feel an ethical responsibility to share about this experience, so I wrote a long Substack post documenting what happened and what I learned. I hope it reaches anyone who is struggling with similar things, searching for something deeper, or simply curious about what meditation can unlock. Substack link in reply 🙂
