Nice argument, but it’s too late. I’ve already depicted myself as the calm under pressure, stoic, and suave groundhog while you are the cowering and fearful groundhog

If you put down $250K on a $400K house at 6% the monthly payment is $900... that doesn't even include home insurance or property tax. To even consider an $800/month mortgage as normal just shows the dissonance between generations. Rent is 2-3X that all across the country. But you are right, if everyone had $800 mortgages a lot less people would be suffering lol

I know you said "most families", (not all). Nevertheless, I find it hard to believe anyone is suffering. I eat well for 300 dollars a month, my mortgage is 800 a month, have a well paying job (here in North Florida, and before that in Georgia). All the people I know are doing well. A bit pessimistic, Matt?

Americans are suffering. It is way too expensive just to live for most families. Our cities aren’t safe. Our country is being transformed every day by foreign migration. Our elections aren’t secure. The SAVE act was not passed and won’t be passed. It’s time to end this war in Iran and focus on our country, our people, our future. Far too much of Trump’s second term has been spent on foreign adventures. It has to end. Turn the attention back home.

Why does everything feel like theater? We have a Congress that won't pass something 83% people want. We have a judicial system that doesn’t hold criminals accountable. We have an education system that doesn’t educate. We have a non-profit system that profits from our tax dollars. We have a health care industry that profits from you staying sick. We have a financial industry that needs you to stay in debt. We have an insurance industry that fights every single claim. It just all feels so fake, so theatrical.

@jm29810861 @suburbs_enjoyer @db_fink so what you're saying is that when someone is 48 years old they can have $180K for a down payment? do you think houses will be 2-3 times cheaper or 2-3 times more expensive over the next 30 years? lol

@suburbs_enjoyer @db_fink Invest it at 5% for 30 years and you'll have about 180k. To earn that much on a job you'd need to make about 250k before taxes. It's amazing how much the small sacrifices can add up over time. But where's the fun in that.

The problem with this boomer debate for me is that they're completely unwilling to understand how the economic context has changed over the past 40 years.

Just sold my 1340 sqft 2 bed 1 bath "starter home" built in 1930 for $510K lol Even with 20% down that's $3500/month including property taxes and home insurance. Unless you are buying 40 miles outside of your city in a new-build clone neighborhood, "starter" homes no longer exist.

@Lee_in_Iowa This is generally the case. Young people have elevated expectations today. A starter home is considered a 3bed/2b 2500 SF home, with all the modern conveniences. Boomers didn't have the same thing.

Boomer here. I bought my first house after ten years of saving like crazy. And the interest was 14.5%. I don’t know where kids got the idea that they were due a house and new car at college graduation, but that’s NOT how it ever was.
heretical lakeloon@loonlake55

Too many young people are resenting Boomers, claiming that Boomers had it " easy " financially in their youth. Here are a few fun facts about growing up Boomer. 1. Almost everyone grew up with one bathroom. Mom, Dad and all 3-6 siblings. 2. If you did get to take a vacation, you drove. With no air conditioning. No cup holders. No iPads. Just black vinyl seats and bologna sandwiches. 3. There were no club sports. No Parks and Rec activities. Summer camp was for rich kids. Get yourself a bike, a stick and a few friends. If you were bored, you laid in the grass and looked at clouds. 4. You ate what was served. Even if it was chicken livers. No DoorDash, no backup Totino's rolls. 5. No AP classes, no PSEO, no "fun" elective. They assigned you to a class. You went. You did what they asked. Or else. 6. Unless you had rich parents, you had a nice VFW wedding. Maybe rent a room at a modest hotel. 7. Most Boomers got their first pedi and mani in their 50s (when their feet got farther away). We didn't even know people got massages in real life, only in Hollywood. 8. You packed your own lunch for decades. 9. No one knew what red light therapy was, a facial, a spa day, or a cold plunge. Your gym was the YMCA. Usually in a rather old building. 10. We grew up with 18 percent inflation, 14 percent mortgage rates, 3 million continuing unemployment claims, and 200 other applicants competing for the same job. Now, this is not to say Millenials and Gen Z have it easy or don't face problems. It's just to say, nobody has it easy or doesn't face problems. My only hope, as my mom would say, is I live long enough to see my kids' kids complain about how easy they had it!

You also had what were essentially risk free treasury bills yielding 11-15% during that time The government basically guaranteed a 2X return EVERY YEAR compared to average YoY market growth of 7%. Besides a few very specific exceptions, I have no sympathy for any Boomers struggling today. No "kids" are saying they are owed a house or car, they just think they should be able to afford one after doing everything they've been told to do since they were a child and while working 40-60 hours per week. The system is clearly broken and trying to defend it and push the can down the road to the next generation is exactly why we are still in this mess.
