This thing with Cardinal Pizzaballa was a blunder by Israel, but is clearly being manipulated by the Tuckerite types who want to push a false narrative that Israel oppresses Christians. It's part of a long op to try to erode evangelical support & stoke religious anger.

@HAHazony Alone. He wanted to hold mass alone. This is the same man who offered his life for the people captured in Gaza. He is not afraid.

Sorry, but this doesn’t work. You don’t make a decision to stop the most important liturgical celebrations of the year a surprise to the people subjected to it. If my town wanted to shut down the Synagogue during the high holy days for security reasons, it would be an insult to do it as a surprise.
Kamel Amin Thaabet@K_AminThaabet

Jerusalem police barring Cardinal Pizzaballa & his small contingent from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was a poor decision but shouldn't be reported as if intended as a religious affront (was security driven). There is full freedom of religion for Christians in Israel.

This is the correct decision and what should have been done in the first place. By all accounts, Cardinal Pizzaballa has cooperated with the safety concerns and cancelled the procession. It makes sense to ban large gatherings, for all religious groups, in those unprotected areas. But if he and other Catholic leaders are willing to take the risk for themselves due to the importance of the holiday, then Israel should do everything possible to accommodate it. Israel has enough problems without stepping on unnecessary and easily avoidable landmines. Whoever was foolish enough to not work with The Cardinal prior ti today to find a solution should be removed from the decision-making process.
Prime Minister of Israel@IsraeliPM

However, given the holiness of the week leading up to Easter for the world’s Christians, Israel’s security arms are putting together a plan to enable church leaders to worship at the holy site in the coming days.

@JewishWonk My guess is collectively Jewish donors are more likely to be left of center and not progressive or DSA? Yglesias may have it backwards: Strategically, pushing Jews away may be an attempt for the Left to gain power?

The problem with this argument, which Matt would rate higher if he were actively involved in Jewish life, is that animus towards Israel is a permission structure for bigotry, harassment, and assault against American Jews. It amounts to throwing us under the bus for votes.
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

As someone who absolutely fears the left's growing power, I think the smart play is for moderate Dems to go on Piker's show and agree with him that Israel is bad and then stick to their guns on other moderate stuff.

@agenturban All that being said, the best aspect about Massachusetts has been raising a family. Fortunately or unfortunately, AI will re-rate real estate. In a world with more abundance and leisure time I question whether MA can compete effectively.

Massachusetts is losing young professionals (26-35) at an alarming rate. Over 7,500 net filers left in 2023 alone – more than 5x the loss a decade ago. It's not about dodging taxes; it's about the math on building a life here with sky-high housing and rent costs.

@ThirdWayMattB Actually, I am not. I am in my district. I am doing a panel discussion virtually with @krystalball and other influencers and leaders! And Piker is on a different panel with other influencers. So you expect people to boycott the entire event because Piker is on a panel?

Very little about what’s happened this year is going to make the government of Iran — or frankly any country, up to and including Canada and Denmark — less interested in obtaining a nuclear deterrent.

Megyn Kelly on the Iran War: “As this thing goes south, we need to know exactly who talked [President Trump] into it and what representations were made to convince the president that this was a good idea. Who? Who specifically? The names we know are Bibi Netanyahu first and foremost. Lindsey Graham, equally to blame. We know from the Wall Street Journal report that Mark Thiessen of Fox News and General Jack Keane were major advocates of the war. Ok, I like those guys, but they appear to have been very wrong that this was a good idea.” “And we could keep going. Mark Levin, chief among them. He says now, ‘Oh, it wasn’t me.’ Every night, every night on Fox News out there urging the president to do this. And then he had a meeting with him in June, where we know, he denies it now, we know he pushed him for this.” “Ben Shapiro was out on his show every day pushing this war. Like, there were very prominent activists on the right who were practically frothing at the mouth for this thing. And now that it’s not only going poorly, but the president’s poll numbers are in a precipitous freefall, we’d love to see some accountability. Who? Who promised him what?”

@JakeWSimons That’s likely incorrect. The calculus of this war has changed with the closure of the sea route and the attack on neighboring facilities.

🚨 Latest Israeli intelligence assessment: regime change in Iran is now off the table, as the opposition is not organised and is successfully repressed, sources tell me. Israeli targeting is therefore shifting from regime repression apparatus to its military capabilities. Looks like this thing will end with a deal after all. One Israeli source says: “I believe we are in a better place but it’s not a win.” My heart goes out to the Iranian people. Whatever the regional benefit from this war, they will likely continue to suffer. Depressing but we stay strong. Free Iran!
