@SebMilbank I believe that it’s about 37% in RBKC - it took me 20 years to afford to move back there!

Some local thoughts follow...So I'm reading up on my local elections, having recently moved to the area, and I'm learning that my borough (Lambeth), has one of the biggest waiting lists for council housing in London... 🧵

@annavanpraagh It’s remarkable that the teachers are prepared to give up their weekends to help their pupils succeed!

I’m finding the horrified reactions to this letter from the ‘be kind’ brigade revealing. Michaela gets extraordinary results for a deprived cohort, which should be applauded. What’s kinder, allowing kids to flounder, or being honest about what success entails, and demanding pupils make sacrifices to achieve the best outcomes they possibly can

🚨 A letter to Year 11 families at Michaela Community School states that children who do not attend weekend and holiday revision sessions will “spend time in Referral” They must also attend in full school uniform

There seems to be this assumption that because Ukraine is at war and is receiving military aid, that every single Ukrainian must be dirt poor. Obviously Ukraine has a wealthy class of people, as every country does. And some of them will take their possessions and flee for the duration of the war, because they can afford to. It’s wrong. They should stay and help defend their country, but it’s isn’t some big money laundering conspiracy that it’s made out to be. Just rich people running away from conscription.

Just come back from Tenerife, the amount of Ukrainians decked in gold chains and £100,000 watches was insane, we are being drained.

What struck me is how we are living in two totally different worlds, even when only living feet apart. There's a Britain, a London, that lives entirely within the belly of the state, and another for whom it barely exists except as an extractrive force.

The European Commission literally just dropped a research on how to collect more taxes without making you angry enough to leave. TLDR: higher wealth taxes, inheritance taxes + exit tax is coming

I must say I am *shocked* at how many of the highly ‘virtuous and kind’ left wing media and establishment politicians have revealed they view living near asylum seekers is a “punishment”. Whoever would have thought!

Neighbour just told me they've booked a trip to Australia with their 10 year old twins in economy while they're in business. Tell me this is unusual.

@fergustp @SecretVC2 @spamalotcamelot @MerrynSW This is a great example of 'wealth' taxes being applied incorrectly and inappropriately. Farmers working the land and producing goods should not be stung like this. Whereas people with hundreds of millions of assets should not be able to expect to keep them forever more.

Labour's Renters' Right Act is protecting millions of renters across England. Here's what it means for you: ✅ No more bidding wars. It will be illegal to request, encourage or accept offers above the set price. ✅ Landlords will not be allowed to ask for more than one month’s rent upfront. ✅ No more “no-fault” evictions. All evictions will require valid grounds. ✅ An end to fixed term tenancies. All tenancies will default to being a monthly rolling contract. ✅ More rights for your pets. Landlords must consider pet requests fairly. ✅ Landlords will have to give at least four months notice when ending a tenancy to sell.

@JohnRadoux @Madz_Grant @StephenMorganMP You should judge renters…as smarter and more flexible and not in need of the only serious leverage middle classes can access (mortgage) - anyone who bought in London/SE since 2014 is going to be in negative equity…

@poolhayes93 @spamalotcamelot @MerrynSW The problem is that the bulk of the wealth is in illiquid assets like property and land that don’t cash flow and are impossible to sell off 6% at a time. Other people not being able to afford their lives is a separate isssue entirely.

@SecretVC2 @spamalotcamelot @MerrynSW Define 'major' in this context. Do people have to sell assets i.e. exactly what Gary is arguing for? And is that 'major' problem as big a problem as not being able to afford rent, heating and food?
