Our goal is to drive economic transformation in harmony with our climatic realities. A lot of work lies ahead as we prepare for #COP29 in Baku. I am fully committed to working collaboratively and inclusively to shape Africa’s negotiation stances using African-led data, insights, and ideas to ensure robust representation and participation of Africa at COP29. Our approach must recognize Africa’s vast potential: a growing workforce, ample land and natural resources, and immense opportunities for renewable energy generation to achieve energy security and green industrialization. This unique combination positions us to accelerate global decarbonization and lead the race to net zero and beyond. Each of us has a critical role to play! After long deliberations in Istanbul, the IPCC decided the key elements of its work programme until 2030: 3 volumes and a Synthesis Report (as during previous cycles), a Special Report on Cities and Climate Change, two methodological reports on Short-lived Climate Forcers and on Carbon Dioxide Removal, Utilisation and Storage Technologies, and an update to the 1994 #IPCC Technical Guidelines on impacts and adaptation, including adaptation indicators, metrics, and methodologies. Credit to #COP28 President Al Jaber for the masterstroke of getting the Loss & Damage Fund agreed on the first day of COP28. That was a game changing move. Had it been left until the end, rich countries would have used it as bargaining chip. This cleared the runway for the first global stocktake.
