This March, we are proud to recognize James Gurney as Livingston County's Veteran of the Month. James Gurney served in the United States Navy from 1972 to1978, undertaking the demanding role of a submariner. He was stationed aboard the USS Sturgeon and the USS Howard W. Gilmore, participating in important deployments that advanced national security and demonstrated the strength of America’s submarine fleet. Rising to the rank of Machinist’s Mate First Class (MM1), Mr. Gurney received an honorable discharge after completing his service with distinction. Beyond his military achievements, James Gurney has been a cornerstone of veteran advocacy and community engagement in Livingston County. He is an active member of organizations such as the American Legion, AMVETS, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and U.S. Submarine Veterans, where he continually supports fellow veterans and their families. Mr. Gurney has played a vital role in the Brighton Memorial Committee, helping to preserve and honor the memory of those who served. As part of the VFW Honor Guard, he ensures that ceremonial traditions are upheld with dignity and respect. At the American Spirit Center, his contributions have enriched the lives of many. His energy and vision have shaped community events like the annual Lenten fish fry, and he has been instrumental in the Community Service Awards program, recognizing others for their dedication. Additionally, Mr. Gurney oversaw the renovation of the Post Canteen, creating a welcoming space for veterans and community members alike. Congratulations, Mr. Gurney, on being named Veteran of the Month, your legacy of service will continue to inspire future generations. #VeteranOfTheMonth #CommunityLeadership #HonoringService
