GrapheneOS protects user data on a stolen device with the combination is much stronger exploit protections making it highly unlikely even a sophisticated adversary can get into the device quickly with a locked device auto-reboot timer. After a GrapheneOS device is locked, it will reboot after 18 hours without a successful unlock which can be configured between 10 minutes and 72 hours. GrapheneOS clears freed memory which results in clearing most memory as part of processes exiting and kernel tasks ending while the OS shuts down for either a shutdown or reboot. GrapheneOS also clears all of the memory at boot. Pixels added memory clearing at boot to the firmware boot modes based on our request so those are covered too. For a device running non-hardened Android, rebooting won't fully restore Before First Unlock state due to lack of fully clearing memory. Even the most secure non-GrapheneOS devices based on Android still fail to protect against widely available devices for data extraction sold by multiple companies. Turning off the device is crucial for non-hardened Android devices to protect data against an attacker with physical access. Nearly all Linux-based devices are extremely vulnerable to being exploited while locked via USB. GrapheneOS heavily protects against exploits with hardware memory tagging and other generic exploit protections. GrapheneOS also has specialized USB protection which blocks new USB devices at both a Linux kernel and USB controller after the device is locked along with disabling USB data at a hardware level in the USB controller. There are lots of other attack vectors such as the radios too. If there's no locked device auto-reboot feature, then an attacker only needs to keep a device charged and unable to connect to a network by blocking the signals. They'll have an indefinite amount of time to come up with a way to exploit it. They can wait around until there are public exploits for a device. Most mobile devices have anti-theft protection preventing using them for anything else without access to the Apple or Google account so it's quite typical for devices to be waiting around for an exploit to at least bypass factory reset protection. There's the whole separate issue of a large portion of Android devices still not having a secure element throttling attempts at guessing the PIN/password along with not providing support for conveniently using a strong passphrase without biometric-only unlock as GrapheneOS does via the 2nd factor fingerprint PIN feature. Most aftermarket operating systems including Evolution X and LineageOS which it's based on do not keep basic defenses against data extraction intact let alone greatly improving them. Lack of verified boot means no real exploit is needed to bypass encryption for After First Unlock state making it even more important to turn off the device before it's obtained by an attacker or for them to turn it off themselves. A thief turning off an insecure phone like this is giving you a gift and helping protect your data. Trying to stop them doing that is a bad move.

Most people don’t realize how dangerous this is until it actually happens. Imagine your phone gets stolen in a crowded metro station. The thief’s FIRST move usually isn’t resetting the phone. It’s turning it off instantly. Why? Because the second your phone powers down: • Find My Device stops updating • live location dies • remote lock becomes useless • tracking gets delayed • recovery chances drop massively That tiny 2 second action changes everything. Evolution X’s “Power Off Verify” blocks that. If the phone is locked, you now need the PIN/password before shutting it down or restarting it. So in a real theft scenario: • the thief grabs your phone • tries to power it off • gets blocked at the lockscreen • your device stays online longer • you still have time to track, ring, or remotely secure it And honestly… that extra time can be the difference between recovering your phone and losing it forever. Simple feature. Very underrated security upgrade.
