Its rare for a candidate to win the electoral vote but lose the popular vote. A 2.5% margin is big, its big enough that I'd bet on a win every single time. The average person views 2.5% intuitively as a marginal lead and not a substantial lead.

Libs complain about the Electoral College but it's rare that the candidate who loses the popular vote wins the presidency. Unusually, it happened twice in two decades (Bush '00 and Trump '16), but before then you have to go back to 1888 (Harrison) to find another instance.
