What films have you seen more than seven times? Me: I saw Matthew Barney’s “Cremaster 4” over 75 times. I imagine I have watched “Godfather I & II” 10 times. I used to constantly rewatch “Blade Runner.”

Flashback to The Black Box at NFTNYC 2023, crafted into life with the heart and intention by Bryony @ShearmurB and Brian @briancattelle. A tiny little place and time where the walls fell away and artists connected with audiences on the most human level. The distance between artist and audience vanished, and in its place was a raw, open dialogue; tender, human, and real. It felt less like an exhibit and more like a soul-to-soul exchange. The best comparison I can think is, a reunion of kindred spirits, the room felt like a stargazing campfire talk with a quiet reverence for simple human decency. One night, the four of us, Ash @nomadicash77, Gabriel @GabrielSpangler, Mo @mohawagri (who went by Dcat at time), and myself, wandered into Chinatown for an impromptu photo walk, “curbside edition” style. We each tackled the scene in our own unique way. Ash, ever the methodical one, set up his Hasselblad on a tripod, studying the scene with a quiet, purposeful gaze. Gabriel, on the other hand, was a whirlwind, his eyes darting everywhere, always moving, constantly searching for the right combination of light and shadow. Dcat kept things more relaxed, casually framing shots with an eye for the perfect angle. As for me? I was more of an observer. As a native New Yorker of 41 years more drawn to capturing them than the city itself. These three wandering photographers were the anomaly, the streets, they’re eternal. At least until the at end of the urban stroll, I couldn’t resist the urge to climb a traffic light post to get a perspective on a corner sign. Gabriel, quick on his feet with both a sharp sense of humor and effortlessly cool. Laid-back vibes. Turned up looking like he walked right out of a photography manual, a clear mastery of lens and film camera setups, looking every bit the expert. But it wasn’t just his technical know-how that stood out, he also had a thoughtful, consideration towards others. Made a lighthearted suggestion to nudge Juliet @JulietHaas, without directly saying it, that she might want to trade in her dress shoes for sneakers if she was gearing up to walk all over New York City for art events all week. Not everyone would catch the nuance, but it takes a certain kind of person to notice those little things. On the last night of the event, @MoonlightCiara, both a mixed media artist and the evening’s DJ, laying down the beats. The gallery turned into a dance floor, a canvas of movement with fellow creatives breaking out their dance moves. A blur of smiles in the dark and rhythm. Made this video from the raw footage to honor that energy; the essence of unfiltered conversations, the deep dives and discussions of all matter of things with the kind of sincere dialogue that only true intimacy around art can spark. It’s my thank you and my tribute. No massive LED screen or sleek stage could recreate the pulse that the Black Box Gallery provided in that tiny place. Words can't fully express how grateful I am for the enriching time spent at the Black Box Gallery. It was like a burst of energy, a much-needed strike of lightning, a charge for the soul in a way I didn’t know I needed. A special thanks to @JacqScripps. Sorry for the noise. Keep lighting up the world, no matter where you go. 🚨🚨🚨 Sadly, I missed Karen @KJerzykPhoto and Mo’s @mohawagri presentations, but I’ve heard they were great. If anybody knows anyone who was there, I’d love to swap notes or hear your takeaways. Also, if you’re up for it, I’d be down to co-write for a longer article format about the experience for a Squarespace page. It’d be cool to capture everything we learned and share it with others. Also recall hearing whispers about live performances there as well.
