Spending a decade watching a dedicated high speed railway between several of the UK's largest cities get repeatedly downgraded to what can now be described as an "electrified link" (currently being delivered on the existing line and delayed since the early 1990s) is radicalising.

@EngFocus @GarethDennis @philatrail Bi-modes are not a like for like replacement for full electrification, I worry that the prevalence of use of units such as the 80Xs is leading a few policy makers down the path of not needing wires all the way...

@GarethDennis @philatrail Surely it's too late to descope electrification? I know only 25% has been delivered, but plenty of work has already taken place. Tunnels aren't as problematic as I thought, but I guess those could be dropped as well as ETCS?

@ctp270559 Quick answer is a DVD, drivers vigilance device. But you've also got AWS acknowledgement that would have the same affect

@SignalstoDanger Without going into technical detail if the driver died while driving, the trains emergency brakes would automatically come in and stop the train, you’re very safe.

Tell me you don't know a lot about rail operations without telling me... But that's ok, the people involved in them do, leave it to us :)

@Bkasparas Well I don't have to now, I'd probably add in all the competence management assessments, unobtrusive monitoring and random OTDR downloads that confirm these medically fit individuals are doing the job properly... Oh and the TPWS OSS grids and speed guns that are out there too

I never expected to be driving a Derby LMS 4F (or a Maunsell S15) with 18 wagons in tow around @AlstomUK Derby Works! Thanks to the Ground Level 5” Gauge guys for being so trusting of me with their locomotives and *everyone* at #thegreatestgathering being such chuffing good fun.

Need to make a little shout out to the less talked about heroes of the a greatest gathering, the incredible fleet of immaculate heritage busses ferrying people to and from Derby station, it's been a real pleasure to have a ride on a couple each day!
