I feel a lot of people don’t think about, or realize, how much a person can change as they grow older. Especially after living through different types of trauma. Sure, people will or can retain certain characteristics, but their outlook may change, their desires, likes or interests, or even relationships with people they care about. Hell, sometimes they can become completely unrecognizable, for better or worse. Life and the environment you find yourself in can really have an impact on who you are as a person. To think someone is going to be the same person in their teens or early 20’s after 20+ years, and loads of adversity, is a bit foolish.

Writing tip: You want your bad guy to be scary and effective at what they do. They can have flaws, same as any character, but if they don't pose a serious threat then they are inadequate to give your story stakes and thus justify the audience investing in the conflict.

The flanderisation of stormtroopers pisses me off. In their first ever onscreen appearance they clear a hallway of enemy soldiers, taking minimal casualties, with a full frontal assault. So much can be inferred about their equipment and skillset here.
