Sometimes I wonder if genuine love still exists. I have finally become an option
My girlfriend and I are workingclass people trying to build a life together. I earn less than ₦150,000 monthly, and she earns around ₦100,000. Life in Nigeria is tough, with fuel, food, and basic survival becoming more expensive every day.
I have a small car that I use for work and occasional taxi services to earn extra income. Some weeks, I make an additional ₦30,000 to ₦40,000, which helps with fuel, maintenance, and other responsibilities.
She knows this and understands that when I’m unavailable to pick or drop her off, it’s usually because I’m trying to earn more for our future.
Then I noticed something.
Whenever I said I was going for taxi work, she would post WhatsApp status videos from the inside of a clean, expensive car, never showing the driver.
At first, I ignored it, but it kept happening.
Eventually, I found out the car was a Lexus RX 350 belonging to a man who regularly picked her up.
One day I confronted her and asked, Who is this man?
Her reply shocked me.
She said, If the first line doesn’t go through, the second line will.
When I asked what she meant, she explained that she calls him her second line and even referred to him as her God.
My heart sank.
While I’m out struggling, working, and trying to build a future for us, someone else is enjoying the benefits of the relationship?
If you already have a second option, why stay with me?
If you’ve found someone better, why not let me go?
I understand that not every relationship ends in marriage and that people can change their minds. But deception hurts more than rejection.
The real pain is realizing that while you were sincerely building a future together, the other person was already building alternatives.
Maybe love and loyalty still exist, but experiences like this make it hard to trust again.
To everyone genuinely loving and sacrificing for someone, may you never be an option to a person you’ve made a priority.
Know your worth.
Love should not feel like a competition.
Love should feel like a partnership.
