WHO is aware of and supporting a public health event involving a cruise vessel sailing in the Atlantic Ocean. To date, one case of hantavirus infection has been laboratory confirmed, and there are five additional suspected cases. Of the six affected individuals, three have died and one is currently in intensive care in South Africa. Detailed investigations are ongoing, including further laboratory testing, and epidemiological investigations. Medical care and support are being provided to passengers and crew. Sequencing of the virus is also ongoing. Hantavirus infections are typically linked to environmental exposure (exposure to infected rodents’ urine or faeces). While rare, hantavirus may spread between people, and can lead to severe respiratory illness and requires careful patient monitoring, support and response. WHO is facilitating coordination between Member States and the Ship’s operators for medical evacuation of two symptomatic passengers, as well as full public health risk assessment and support to the remaining passengers on board. WHO is grateful for the rapid actions and coordination. We have informed our National Focal Points according to the International Health Regulations and a Disease Outbreak News for the public will be issued.

Much interest in this canine at work. Two federal law enforcement officials tell me that working dog did not provide an "alert" signal to the handler. That specific canine is trained for explosives detection not ammunition since it's always around armed law enforcement. It's trained to move into open doors/spaces to check air flow for minute particles of explosives. The USSS officer has been interviewed by investigators.

Today, we are releasing video already provided to U.S. District Court showing Cole Allen shoot a U.S. Secret Service officer during his attempt to assassinate the President at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. There is no evidence the shooting was the result of friendly fire. The video also shows Allen casing the area in the Hilton Hotel the day before the attack. My office along with the @FBI will continue this extensive investigation to bring Cole Allen to justice.

Wondering about those bright green and blue lights in the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea? I remember first learning about this phenomenon, the art of squid fishing, while I was a graduate student at @Scripps_Ocean. Fishermen use these lights to attract plankton and fish, and squid soon follow to catch their illuminated prey. The wavelengths of light used have shifted over the years, with the current scene so colorful it looks like a Christmas village.

We should oppose the Trump administration's abuse of the law to intimidate and cripple private advocacy organizations they don't like. The kids are more than alright, they're extraordinary. And, incredibly, the bus driver has made a 100% full recovery. Last Wednesday, on a seemingly ordinary day in Mississippi, a school bus driver suffered a severe asthma attack. She blacked out behind the wheel. The bus loaded with 40 children, was hurtling down a busy four-lane highway. Disaster felt inevitable. But instead of chaos, these kids showed grit and unshakable courage. Five middle schoolers immediately sprang into action in a scene straight out of an edge-of-your-seat thriller. A 12-year-old seized the wheel, steering the bus away from catastrophe. Another kid slammed on the air brakes, grinding the bus to a halt in the median, averting disaster. One student dialed 911 with trembling fingers but an unshakable resolve. Meanwhile, another hero-in-training searched for the driver’s nebulizer and personally administered her life-saving medication. None of these kids waited for an adult to save the day. They became the adults right then, right there.
