You still see some skepticism of gaming as an artistic medium but it's worth pointing out that in the 1990s there was a lot of very weirdly intellectually and culturally ambitious games that are both forgotten now and, at the time, were clearly meant for a smart audience.
The Dark Eye is a 1995 adventure game that adapts multiple Edgar Allen Poe stories, and there's an entire animated sequence where William S. Burroughs narrates The Masque of the Red Death. The art style - kind of a goth Mission School - is extremely memorable, and Burrough's drugged out narration is fantastic.

@NRanak65543 @theultrayusuf Iron Lung is a great filter for people who have never tried to watch genuinely difficult films, films which did not bring the popcorn to you, but placed it so you had to work for it.
The script is built so you can miss lines and still be fine.
