I’ve spent way too much time doom scrolling, shouting into the wind, poisoning my brain with the worst of the world.

So I’m officially taking a break from Twitter, the bird app that I am posting this from. Some weirdo has defaced the icon and branding. There’s tons of terrible stuff in here. Engagement is at an all time low.

@joeg816 @nateberkopec I commonly see sites (even shiny SPA ones) with jpgs 10x the size of the total KB weight of those 58 JS files. A single 2.3MB gzipped JS file is absurd.

@fkasummer @OhAnotherAlt But unlike last time where Moore’s law eventually caught up and saved us, that’s not happening again. We’re finally at the diminishing returns stage of silicon hardware development and what ever comes after silicon is many decades away.

@fkasummer @OhAnotherAlt @bdhmin The technologies under-pinning modern web development are too resource-heavy. Remember how using computers felt in the early 2000’s? That was a period of software inefficiency outpacing hardware advancement. The web is heading us there again.

YouTube’s attacks on creators increases with ever passing day. The Chrome team is trying to destroy the web with Manifest V3 and their new DRM APIs. It seems like Sundar has overseen a total meltdown of Google’s character and integrity as a company. Is it not time for change?

Is anyone even still working at Google Search / Ads? Their search quality has been garbage for years, only getting worse and worse, their ad sanitization becoming defacto malicious in the level of neglect at this point.

@TylerGlaiel @drTouchGrass That license being proprietary, unfortunately, and they don’t allow you to ship your game with it, instead it’s just supposed to be a demo to show you what the game *could* run like on their hardware… but they want you to actually rewrite it?

About the only thing that would make me care about doing mac support ever again is if valve does a proton-style thing for mac that can just magically run windows builds on mac. Apple has a tendency to break shit with every update to keep devs on their toes, for fun, so unlikely

@linobigatti @RogerWolff2 @TylerGlaiel It actually *is* “JPEG on steroids”, because it happens the next gen version of JPEG, “JPEG XL” implements exactly this. :)

@RogerWolff2 @TylerGlaiel I think the idea is a ultra-optimized codec, which sacrifices the decoding of noise for better size. In this way, it would kinda be like JPEG on steroids, because even though JPEG tries to encode noise normally, it still loses data in the process.

so like, white noise tends to be like the least-compressible type of image, but you can also just generate white noise with barely any code, is there any compression algorithm that just like, instead of trying to store every pixel of the noise, just goes "theres noise here"?

@ostynhyss @LukeMiani Anyways, it would be great if that kind of reuse was more feasible on EOLed smartphones. You can sometimes do this with older Android devices, but never iPhones.

@ostynhyss @LukeMiani In fact “get a 10 year old MacBook and install a user friendly Linux” is my advice any time someone asks about Chromebooks. Fantastically better hardware for a fraction of the price.

I’m sorry but if you guys think you give Apple your old device and they magically recycle the whole thing into a new product with zero waste, y’all have been greenwashed
