This is an electric steering rack from a Ford Taurus. Customer hit a pothole and the steering rack completely broke, but did not even bend the rim. I decided to disassemble the rack to see how it was made, and I was surprised at how thin and small the motor drive belt was. It was also surprising to me how thin the aluminum casting was. Now I am sure this went through lots of testing and validation, but I expected to see things for a steering system made a little more heavy and robust. I can’t help but think about the days when cars had steering boxes which were virtually indestructible. However, this electric steering rack assembly broke from a simple pothole hit.
