@the1andonlyM @GangsterCinema Anything can happen in real life but that's not excuse to put it in fiction because incredibly unlilely shit happens. In fiction you have to be more careful and make it "realistic".

@Slothrop47 @GangsterCinema Everyone has an idea of how they’ll react in a gunfight.. until they’re IN one. This is why we train in the Army. When shit hits the fan for real, it won’t be a foreign situation for you.

The scene in Collateral when Tom Cruise shoots the two meth heads in the alley is a masterclass in realistic gunfire sound design. Michael Mann chose to shoot the scene in a location in downtown L.A. that had perfect natural acoustics for a gunshot—a concrete canyon situated between a tall apartment building and a large above‑ground parking lot. When the blank rounds were fired, the sound waves bounced off the parallel concrete walls, producing a deafening, reverberating blast that hangs in the air. According to sound designer Elliott Koretz, the gunshot audio captured on set was so powerful Michael Mann told him to leave it mostly untouched. Koretz said he only lightly enhanced the impact of the shots; the final mix still uses that same raw production echo.

@GangsterCinema How do you know he was high? He looked serious and locked in. He was ready to draw, had his hand on the gun before Cruise made a move, yet while his buddy is getting shot he's fondling his balls or whatever the hell he's doing.

how is this even a debate? "is intelligence the person who fires back a joke before you finish your sentence, or the one who pulls 'petrichor' and 'melancholy' into everyday conversation?" lmao. quick wit is not intelligence itself, it's processing speed married to social confidence. you can call them brilliant, they might also simply have low latent inhibition and a childhood spent needing to deflect. vocabulary, on the other hand, belongs to the person who speaks like a nineteenth-century letter. usually, this means they've done one of/maybe both of two things: read a great deal, and grown up in an environment where precision was rewarded. n.b. vocabulary is cultural compound interest. it impresses, but it also lies. this is why most of the most semantically dazzling people you will ever meet cannot wire a lamp, apologize sincerely, or predict that their business idea will fail. but they can name the failure in five languages tho so which is more accurate? NEITHER. both are single notes in a symphony. but if you pinned me to the wall and said, "choose," i'd say quick wit is the weaker signal cus quick wit is often just defensiveness with a PhD. at least vocabulary is earned through exposure and curiosity over time. but unlike what y'all are saying, the single most reliable measure of intelligence is: the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time without leaking anxiety. call it cognitive elegance under tension.
Hitchslap@Hitchslap1

Vocabulary is way better at measuring intelligence. It is not even close.

🚨🗣️ 𝗡𝗘𝗪: A very emotional Bruno Fernandes explains why he rejected a €200M contract from Saudi Pro league: "Instead of becoming the richest person from my town ever, I want to live my dreams. And I want to pass these values on to my children." "Look, my wife.. she chose to live my dream with me when I was still 17. I have been with her since age 16. At age 17 I went to Italy and I earned €1.7k per month. There was a lot of uncertainty. There was nothing guaranteed. My wife had her own life, her own dreams, and she said: 'I am going to help you, and that's what she did'. "Today we have a beautiful family, with 2 beautiful kids." — @StevenBartlett

Two glasses of wine. Didn't get drunk. Couldn't function for three days. This is being celebrated as self-awareness. A healthy 33-year-old body should metabolize two glasses of wine and recover by morning. Billions of people throughout history did exactly that while building civilizations, fighting wars, and running companies. Bartlett has restricted his inputs so aggressively that a single normal human experience sent his entire system into a 72-hour reboot. Engineers call this brittleness. A system optimized exclusively for peak performance under ideal conditions that shatters the moment conditions change. The opposite of antifragile. Remove every stressor for long enough and your body loses the ability to absorb even minor ones. The generation that tracks every HRV reading, weighs every macro, and sleeps in temperature-controlled darkness has accidentally built the most fragile humans in history. Previous generations drank, ate badly, slept rough, and still recovered because constant low-level stress kept their systems adaptable. Two glasses of wine registered as a catastrophic shock because he's spent three years stripping every form of variance from his life. A body that can only perform under perfect conditions is the definition of a fragile system.
Mikli@CryptoMikli

Steven Bartlett says a few glasses of wine ruined the next 3 days of his life “It's one of those areas where you don't understand the hidden cost until you really give it up for a while. I stopped drinking at 30 years old. I'm now 33. When I was 31, I thought, I'll have a drink again because now I could really A/B test it. I had a year of not drinking, decided to have a drink again” “It ruined three days of my life. I had a couple of glasses of wine, didn't get drunk. It ruined three days of my life because of the domino effect it caused” “I got worse sleep that night, and then because I got worse sleep that night, I ate more poorly the next day because my dopamine system or whatever, the cortisol system was all messed up. I podcasted worse. I didn't go to the gym that day or the day after because I felt really bad. I then slept worse, and I could track all of this on my Whoop”

Nicolas Winding Refn gives an inspiring speech about how he died and this movie Her Private Hell brought him back to life as his declaration that cinema is back and resurrected. He mentions that politicians have destroyed the world and stole our money and caused suffering but it is art and cinema that keeps humans together as a shared collective experience. Calling for the theatrical release.
