My good friend Ryan died of cancer. I wrote about saying goodbye to him but couldn’t get the piece accepted anywhere, which pissed me off, but fuck it, it’s on my author site now. Read it if you’d like. johnfduffy.com/can-you-hear-m…

Watching ‘Almost Famous’ with my daughter, and she asked “Is that a real job?” about being a music writer/critic for a magazine. It was sad telling her, “It was.”

@robbskidmore When people read them! When books and films and music had active critics and people were interested in what they had to say.

@SmashedEars Yeah super sad. The days when you could make a living writing about such things.

@SmashedEars He ate beans; he liked beans. Vaporous practitioners of war like eating beans.

@heyThomasTrang You and I park our cars in the same garage. But even Cormac has allowed a semicolon.

@SmashedEars My instinct is that they don’t belong in fiction and look too formal or technical. It breaks the spell of a story. But I have an incredibly cavalier approach to commas and punctuation in general. Not quite Cormac levels of obstinacy but getting there. Also, readers DGAF.

Tomorrow, @PicketFire will be running one day sale on Richard Leise’s novel ‘Dry The Rain.’ Digital copies will be 99 cents wherever you get your ebooks. If you like literary novels that are psychological mind benders, check it out.

@Hart_Horrors I've never read any of Clavell's books I don't think. That show on FX started out okay but got real stupid by the last few episodes.

@ScottLaudati I don’t own a phone. I’m the crusty old grump they have to break out the physical menu for.

I refuse to do the QR code bullshit at restaurants. I'd rather have slasa and nasty ass old lettuce stuck to the menu than have to do an extra step with my shittyass phone that never works. Progress

@SamBuntz @default_friend I’m from Chicago but live in Indiana now. It’s hard as hell for me to get any love in Chicago and it drives me crazy. Can’t get my short stuff in Chicago journals. Cant get my novels in stores. I’m treated better by Ohio stores and book fests. So…..can we be friends?

If you’re a Chicago writer, I want to read your work. @default_friend and I run a writer’s group here and we’re always looking for new people. Let me know if you’re down to join.

@BarneysRubble0 I’m slowly reading 2666. No opinion yet. It’s very….long. Its also hard to judge works in translation because I don’t know what the original prose would have sounded like.

@WhatHoARat @jrostopovich My last dog was named Rooster, after Rooster Cogburn in True Grit. Current dog is named Ozark, because my daughter picked it.

@SmashedEars I have not, but now that you mention it, it seems to be a winning strategy. People don't tend to support the friendly dork always calling out other good books on his podcast.

Been a long time since anyone's read one of my books. Would it help if I did a "buy my book" tweet? No? Okay, nevermind.
