The Renters’ Rights Act coming into force in May will ban no fault eviction and make it possible to challenge unfair rent rises. The @MayorofLondon is setting up a £400k Renters’ Rights Enforcement Fund for renters rights groups and for training for borough enforcement officers.

The people responsible for Britain losing two decades after 2010 will soon tell you that what we really need is cuts to public spending, and tax cuts for the wealthy too, of course. Just unserious: it’s not about spending more, or less. We need to now be thinking like a developing country: cheap energy, cheap housing, development of human capital, technological autonomy, food and energy security. Anyone whose idea of ‘supply side reform’ being the same as cutting corporation tax is presently as useful as an umbrella in a hurricane.

Labour was built on the belief that justice must never belong only to the powerful. Today MPs vote on restricting jury trials. For Labour MPs it’s a test of principle. The poorest & most marginalised depend on juries. Today we’ll see who remembers why they came into politics.

I’ve written to every Member of Parliament today. Proposals before Parliament would remove jury trials from offences carrying up to three years in prison. Freedoms rarely vanish overnight. They are chipped away in the name of efficiency. Juries did not cause the crisis in our courts. Removing them will not fix it. When the state seeks to take someone’s liberty for serious offences, the judgment of ordinary citizens should never be optional. This is close to becoming law. Please read the letter. Contact your MP now.
