When I was a teacher, I thought it was kind of crappy to always be pulling kids for vacations. Once I became a Father, I realized how misguided that was. We pull our kids out every year and take a trip, and I do not regret that decision in the least. They constantly talk about how much fun the trip is, and we're making core memories. They don't feel the same way about a random day in class.

@clever_shark_ @shawngorham There are other benefits to carbon besides lightness, and it’s not much more expensive. It’s the components that add up.

Neither is it necessary on most bikes. Unless you are actually racing and trying to shave off time, you don’t need a carbon bike. Most people (I assume) are riding bikes to exercise … and for that you don’t need the lightest bike around. My cheap and heavy af bike is amazing for working out. It’s misaligned and wants to stop going downhill… but it’s an amazing workout!

People are saying “you can’t compare apples to oranges”… well you can compare the actual manufacturing cost of both apples and oranges to come up with retail value. Here is a rough estimate: For Honda: $3.5–5.5k (450cc engine, transmission, aluminum frame, suspension, electronics). For S-Works: $3.5–5.5k (fact 12r carbon frameset, Dura-Ace Di2, carbon wheels, premium finishes). The dirt bike has more mechanical complexity and requires more materials. The road bike has expensive carbon and other high end components. Both require skilled workers, both probably take around the same amount of time to build, and both can be produced at scale in China (even though Honda is made in Japan - I think - so the cost of labor should be higher). Retail prices are driven industry margins, branding, and what people are willing to pay… not the cost to actually make them.

When the 2012 NDAA surfaced, i was teaching economics in a title I school to predominantly 1st and 2nd generation American seniors. I spent a few days with the kids breaking down the provisions in the NDAA and discussing the likely second order effects of this unconstitutional legislation, especially in light of what the increase in “Security” apparatus would increase the national debt, adding inflationary pressure. My students were especially interested in what it means that the government claimed the power to determine what makes an American citizen a “domestic terrorist”. Those students showed an early understanding of how their phones and internet activity could be weaponized against them even at that time. When Congress passed it, I was horrified, but unsurprised. Their government teacher never mentioned it.

Just a reminder that the Americans in NYC didn’t vote for this. Unfortunately they’re only 1/3 of NYC…and 2/3 is foreigners.

Our modern hermeneutical inclination is to rewrite foundational stories in our own image, judging them against our modern perspective rather than allowing them to judge and challenge our limited perspective. Odysseus’s descent into the underworld and Telemachus’s journey to Pylos and Sparta offer a model for approaching the past: as students, with something like the Socratic disposition, “I know that I do not know.” I come to the dead because my own perspective is limited. I am willing to be challenged by them.
