While starving Gaza and its 80% refugee population, Israel is expanding its war on Palestinian refugees—and on their very ‘refugee-ness’—in the West Bank. Our updated analysis shows that the Israeli military is continuing to carve up the refugee camps of Tulkarm, Jenin and Nur Shams to establish new military routes, displace Palestinians, and dismantle historic centres of resistance. By demolishing homes and repeatedly uprooting Palestinians, Israel is not only forcing them from place to place—itself a form of physical and psychological warfare—but attempting to erase the fact that these locations were ever refugee camps at all and weaken Palestinian demand for return. Each wave of displacement seeks to dissolve the Palestinian refugee identity and undermine the population’s political, historical and legal claims. UNESCO and partners have conducted a technical assessment of the Lido Secondo Lighthouse and Old Mogadishu in Somalia. The mission aims to safeguard the site and supports Somalia’s efforts toward its first potential World Heritage nomination. Read more: bit.ly/43xWJ1Y

The #Madleen is a UK-flagged civilian vessel protected under international maritime law. Its interception in international waters by Israeli forces, and the detention of its civilian crew, including elected political representatives, was a clear violation of international law. At the same time, the mission of the Madleen was and remains an urgent and necessary indictment of the response of international powers to the continued genocidal violence perpetrated by Israel against the Palestinian civilian population of Gaza. We stand in solidarity with the crew of the Madleen, and the Palestinian people.

Honored to attend and deliver the welcoming remarks during the opening ceremony of the UNESCO International Conference on Cultural Heritage in Africa: A Dialogue on Authenticity, being held at the United Nations Complex in Gigiri, Nairobi. With Kenya serving as the Chair of the Africa Group on the World Heritage Committee, this conference offers a timely and vital platform for thought leaders, cultural experts, and policymakers from across the continent & beyond to celebrate, protect and redefine what authenticity means for Africa’s rich and diverse heritage. Africa is endowed with vast and vibrant cultural heritage that has, over time, been challenged by the forces of globalization. Yet this cultural wealth, if properly harnessed can drive social cohesion, foster identity, fuel creative economies, empower communities and inspire future generations. @UnescoEast #AfricanHeritage

One of the key outcome of the conference was that Africa’s heritage is community-centred, pluralistic, and extends beyond materiality. Therefore its authenticity must be considered in relation to both tangible and intangible attributes, including but not limited to oral traditions, spiritual associations, functional use and social values.@UnescoEast

President @WilliamsRuto as he officially presided over the closing ceremony of the International Conference on Heritage Authenticity in Africa, held at the United Nations Complex in Gigiri. This conference was a key turning point for the African Heritage. It will go down in history that the turning point for the authenticity of African heritage happened on the Kenyan soil; the Cradle of Humankind.

Africa is a continent of immense authentic heritage that remains greatly under-represented on the global stage. We call on UNESCO to review the disparities on inherited concepts of authenticity that often give priority to material forms over Africa’s dynamic, community-rooted, and spiritually-inspired heritage. During the closing ceremony of the International Conference on Cultural Heritage and Authenticity in Africa at Gigiri, Nairobi. Witnessed the launch of the Nairobi Outcome Document on Heritage Authenticity, a landmark text capturing African perspectives and charting a path for a more inclusive global heritage framework.
