#Tolkien trivia: who speaks of “kings of little kingdoms”, and to what does that phrase refer?

I’ve had a really rough go of it this week. But hopefully once I have another of my major issues handled tomorrow, I can get back to making progress. Doing everything I can to keep from feeling so stressed, anxious and overwhelmed. 😵‍💫 I just gotta keep reminding myself that God doesn’t give the greatest battles to his weakest warriors. 😅

@TheMiddleborne Very nice! I look at that and knowing that you are planning on making a lot of them, my first thought is that the shield mount to me would probably be the most time consuming to mass produce. I’m assuming it’s maple with the stripes painted red. And the blue is a separate piece?

@JohnnyC4077 @TheMiddleborne I agree, my point is that in arguably the least “grown up” book Tolkien wrote, he goes into as much detail as he did.

@TheMiddleborne @JohnnyC4077 It’s interesting that the battle of the five armies is right up there with the most described battles, at least from a big picture view.

@jzpitts As one of the ones that discovered the books after watching the original trilogy, I will always have love for the movies. He does have a point as far as being somewhat different from the books, but they are definitely masterpieces in film making.

In many ways, he’s not wrong. Would the movies have been as successful if they’d stuck closer to the books, making them less action-oriented and more like a slightly whimsical, episodic travelogue? I doubt it, but who knows. I disagree with C. Tolkien in thinking it’s all bad, though. The movies are much beloved, considered modern classics by many, and arguably one of the best movie trilogies of all time. They also introduced many audiences to Tolkien who otherwise might never have been exposed to him. Sure, some bad has come with it as well, but I don’t think it’ll ever truly diminish what Tolkien was able to accomplish.

Christopher Tolkien lamented that The Lord Of The Rings movies dumbed down the books: "They eviscerated the book by making it an action movie for young people aged 15 to 25. The commercialization has reduced the aesthetic and philosophical impact of the creation to nothing.” Was he right about this?

Hey everyone! Hope you all are doing well! Here is a video comparing the LOTR movies and Rings of Power, why one succeeds where the other struggles. Enjoy and let me know your thoughts! youtu.be/q6ul3xPqqPo

I think it’s funny the way people will latch onto one metaphor as a non-metaphorical absolute and the others as mere flowery descriptions. The Balrog is not a shadow. They are physical beings that can be killed with swords. Glorfindel kills a balrog with a sword. Ecthelion kills one with his helmet spike and driving him into the fountain of Gondolin where they both drown). They are fire spirits who’s flames can be quenched(this balrog becomes a slime beast for a while after.) The Balrog despiction in the films is fine. It’s an acceptable depiction of a corporeal fire demon. The real debate is the wings. And the films did the right thing: make it look dope as heck. The wings are structurally real with shadow/smoke as the membranes
Wren Scarborough🪉✨@wrenscarborough

Ohhh *that’s* why it seems like a lot of people think the movie Balrog’s design is stupid. And they’re right.

@TheMiddleborne My opinion: The person who wrote these beings into his literary works gets to name them, hence you are correct.

Tolkien calls Glaurung *and* Smaug worms or wyrms, despite one being wingless and the other winged
Sandy Petersen 🪔@SandyofCthulhu

@Strangeland_Elf WITH wings they're dragons. WITHOUT wings they're wyrms. Or at least that's one way to classify the unclassifiable, since every single dragon is its own unique horror.

@Andrewnsnyder Kinda like the Tolkien “expert” that was a consultant on ROP justifying Numenorians being dark skinned because Numenor was at the equator.

@TolkienWorldG As much as I liked Vigo Mortenson’s portrayal of Aragorn, his “what say you” in the path of the dead seemed pretty cringe worthy to me.

The Reese’s peanut butter egg has the best chocolate-to-peanut-butter ratio in the entire Reese’s lineup. Sorry for getting political.
