Last year, a vacancy came up for Event Director of my local parkrun after the previous ED stepped down suddenly.
I knew I had the skills and experience for the role. I’m a runner, an England Athletics Run Leader and already knew the event well.
But I hesitated to put myself forward for this (I stress - voluntary) role. Because it’s well-documented that males can and do participate in the female category. Which I strongly disagree with.
At the same time, I know first-hand the huge benefits parkrun brings: people of all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes getting outdoors on a Saturday morning, moving their bodies, socialising, making friends and combating loneliness.
And I asked myself: if every volunteer who shares my view (and I know there are many) stepped back, what would happen to these free events that do so much good for the community?
Before I go further, I should emphasise: I am writing here in a personal capacity, not on behalf of any organisation.
On balance, I decided the benefits for my local community outweighed the negatives. But I also knew it would be out of integrity not to be transparent about my views.
So I follow the rules (which include avoiding anything ‘political’) and welcome all participants and volunteers, as any Event Director should. If someone raised a complaint about category participation, I’d report it to HQ - as I would any other significant incident. But I am very open about my views.
So far, thankfully, I’ve not had to deal with anything unpleasant. Apart from being called a bigot in an (unofficial) Event Directors group - along with others who expressed similar views. It was made clear that none of us would be welcome to volunteer at that individual’s event. I chose to step away rather than escalate - though the irony of *actual* discrimination wasn’t lost on me.
I’ll admit, I feel nervous posting this. Some may argue my only course of action should have been a boycott. But if everyone who shares my view withdrew their support, these events might collapse - and with them, all the physical and mental health benefits they bring.
I also know my transparency risks me being “sacked” from a voluntary role I love. I’m aware of at least one ED who claims they were removed for GC views - but was later reinstated after challenging the decision.
Still, that nervousness is exactly why I feel compelled to say this. Because if you’d told me a decade ago that believing in biological reality could cost me so much - or harm so many others - I simply wouldn’t have believed it.

Shout out to Ilkeston Town FC who today welcomed 290 Middlesbrough fans ahead of their trip to Derby in the championship!
We have seen Chorley do this for clubs heading to fellow clubs in Lancashire but it is fantastic to see Ilkeston also do it. 👏🏻
6 coaches and 3 minibusses. 🚍
Ilkeston said "Our fridges will need re stocking tomorrow as Middlesbrough fans were a thirsty bunch"
A great way for non league clubs to generate a bit more revenue.

Today is Day 50 of the Palestine prisoners’ hunger strike.
This Labour government must release all remand prisoners on bail immediately.
If they die, more blood will be on the hands of @DavidLammy and @Keir_Starmer.

I’m so sad to see that some have reacted angrily to my post about the attack on Bondi beach this morning which sought to explain to people beyond the Jewish community & those who don’t know anyone who is Jewish the full horror of what has happened and the fear it would reinforce in the community.
The comparison between today’s attack & the Christchurch mosque attack was meant to do that and that alone. It wasn’t an attempt to lessen the pain, fear and anger so many feel or to equate losses in one community with those in another.
The Jewish community is tiny - less than a quarter of a million people.
It is the job, maybe even the duty, of people like me - I’m Jewish by heritage although not by upbringing - to try to explain to others the wider significance of today’s horror.
English

The news from Bondi beach is grim.
For many it will have terrible echoes of the massacres on October 7th.
For Jews living here it will feel painfully close to the murders at a synagogue in Manchester.
It is a reminder - if one was needed - that Jews all over the world now live in fear.
If you struggle to understand that fear - you may not have any Jewish family or friends as it is a very small community - I urge you to think of the impact on the Muslim and, indeed, the wider community of the Christchurch mosque attack in New Zealand.
Tonight Jews everywhere will light candles to mark the start of the festival of lights - Hanukkah. Few will feel able to
celebrate. Many will be worrying about what might happen next.

Well, none due to those cancellations!

@SpitfireMKXII Hi David, what journey are you making please?

New, well published rail timetable came into effect this morning. @northernassist emailed proudly highlighting “more train, more carriages, increased choice “….and yet, same old same old from them.

BBC News doing the usual blurry lines thing. Davies isn’t a critic of trans in women’s sport, she a protector of women’s spaces from men. Simple really @BBCNews bbc.com/news/articles/…
English

@tonybainbridge1 You think that way, fair enough, I don’t. The whole organisation is fucked. Good luck nonetheless.
English

@SpitfireMKXII I think there needs to be a distinction here: the club is not an embarrassment, it's the owners.
English

Club is an embarrassment and deserves all of the jibes and crap that will come, a laughing stock and a shambles.

Quite insane that a football pitch one tier away from the Premier League doesn’t have drainage. It’s 2025, Venky’s. Sort it out.
