Legendary Imagineer Tony Baxter has confirmed he worked with the NAACP to make sure nothing offensive or inappropriate made it into Splash Mountain. They told him to stay away from terms that went on to have worse meanings, and specifically brought up the Tar Baby and Uncle Remus

@SplashMHS "approval from the NAACP"? Can you elaborate on that? Am I thinking of a different NAACP? Since when is the approval for NAACP warranted for anything? Did you mean IAAPA or NAPHA?

37 years ago Splash Mountain opened at Disneyland! The ride went through over 6 years of development, got approval from the NAACP, had over 100 animatronics, and broke multiple records! Splash Mountain became an instant classic upon its opening, and was beloved around the world

The original costume used for Brer Rabbit at the Disney Parks! It has only a few known photos and videos, but it was used throughout the 70s to 1988, being retired for a new costume for the then-upcoming opening of Splash Mountain

It is worth noting that 34 years ago the Walt Disney World version of Splash Mountain also officially opened! It was minimal, as the opening ceremony was pushed to October 1992, likely to coincide with the opening of the Tokyo Disneyland version of the ride

@SplashFan2000 They don’t care about inclusivity, and neither does Disney. Disney sent hundreds of thousands of dollars to anti-LGBTQ bills, politicians, and organizations. Disney works with terrible people and countries. Disney even destroyed the reputation of tons of Black history.

Their mindset is: “Is that a young adult with autism upset about a comfort of theirs being taken away? They must be stupid!”

@Chase_Travels25 I think Disney fans should go to this place and see some of the history of Brer Rabbit. He’s much more important than people give him credit for, despite what people say.

So the last day (travel day) is for all the splash fans... In the middle of Georgia in a town called Eatonton there's a wonderful place dedicated to preserving the history of a great American author who retold stories told to him as a child. If you have not been, I highly recommend. It is small and quiet with years of information!

@ButtercupPB @SplashFan2000 So how about explain the history of the movie, why people found it offensive, and how Splash Mountain, one of the most beloved rides of all time, came to be? If we allow Disney to control the narrative, we allow so much important Black actors, actresses, and history to be erased.

@SplashMHS @SplashFan2000 They changed it because they want Song of the South buried. You may disagree with their decision, but it’s been buried since 1986 and clearly many people found it offensive. They changed their water ride to Tiana because kids know Tiana. They can go watch the movie, etc.

@ButtercupPB @SplashFan2000 There’s no need to be rude. The point is that Disney inherently did not change the ride because it had an “irrelevant” theme. They changed it because they refused to acknowledge numerous important Black actors and actresses along with the Brer Rabbit stories.

@SplashMHS @SplashFan2000 It’s not about “arguing.” It’s about grown adults still crying bc Disney changed the theming of a ride to be more relevant to today’s kids. I have no idea if Disney is right or wrong that Song of the South is problematic. That’s irrelevant to me. They changed it for the kids.

Hello! Black historian of Splash Mountain here, there is a reason they decided to base the ride on Song of the South despite the controversy.
I have multiple threads explaining the nuances of the entire situation, I think we should try to be more civil with each other regarding this topic on both sides, the arguing leads to nowhere and I think genuine discussion would be better.

@SplashFan2000 It’s a Small World wasn’t based on an IP that was vaulted permanently for being racially problematic. Song of the South was already vaulted when Splash Mountain opened in 1992. It was dumb to put that dead theming in the parks. Makes zero sense.

@SplashFan2000 Rides need to be creative, well themed, and appealing first and foremost. What a ride is based on is secondary to the creative process. Monsters Unchained is one of the best rides in the world and it is based on films from the 1930s that most of the general public hasn’t seen.

@Cosmic_Gasu Disney has kicked out the teenage/young adult audience from their parks for the most part. They seem to be focused on children and millennials, which sucks to see. During the Eisner era they targeted a lot of rides towards teenagers, and so many of them became beloved.
