It was pleasure to chair a symposium on academic burnout at #OHBM2025, on behalf of @OHBM_Trainees 🔥 A HUGE thank you to our wonderful speakers, who were willing to be so open and vulnerable about their personal experiences - @fMRI_today, @AmyBrodtmann & @DanielMargulies

Thrilled to share our new paper in @NatureHumBehav! nature.com/articles/s4156… We show that combining biological 🧬 and psychosocial 📋 data offers a much stronger, more reliable path to predicting pain and diagnosis. 🧵

Our new @NatureHumBehav paper shows why we need a holistic pain biomarker framework. ML on blood tests, brain/bone imaging & genetics predicts clinical diagnoses but falls short on subjective pain. Adding psychosocial (mood, sleep, stress) boosts both. shorturl.at/vxxeO

Preprint from @VidalDidac - a common brain factor underlying memory decline in older age. Stronger associations in older, but independent of genetic Alzheimer risk. Very interesting work using >10.000 MRI scan. @LCBC_UiO biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Of >105,000 participants with 30-year follow-up, only 9.3% achieved healthy aging (age 70, w/o any chronic diseases). Their diet was significantly associated with this outcome🧵 @NatureMedicine

Chronic stress can dysregulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, contributing to depression, anxiety, PTSD, and cognitive impairment (McEwen et al., 2015). However, some individuals demonstrate resilience—a neurobiological adaptation that mitigates stress-related damage (Fletcher & Sarkar, 2013). Let’s explore the impact of stress on the brain, resilience mechanisms, and clinical considerations for treatment. 👇🧵

Aging is an energetic process The Brain-body Energy Conservation (BEC) model of aging predicts that the brain can slow down energetically expensive functions to prolong lifespan nature.com/articles/s4358… A new paper in mice shows that the brain can slow down biological aging by triggering an energy-saving state of torpor that decreases body temperature: nature.com/articles/s4358… GDF15 -- a blood cytokine signal of energy resistance -- also can cause a torpor-like state that decreases body temperature doi.org/10.1016/j.celr… Research highlight: nature.com/articles/d4158…

Kollenburg et al. review 70 studies on the cingulum, highlighting its role in chronic pain and complex anatomy. Variability in structural models complicates neurosurgical targeting. Standardisation is needed for better treatment. Read at: buff.ly/o99mK6m @NeurosurgeonX

This study by @NickBDiamond et al. finds that sleep enhances memory for the order of events from an art tour, but not the details of the events. The sleep-related advantage for sequences persists for over a year. @stf_simpson @briantlevine @rotmanresearch nature.com/articles/s4156…
