There is one thing circulating on X right now: Hantavirus. Let’s take a quick look at what it is and what it actually means: Hantavirus and Andes virus..what you need to know; Hantaviruses are rare but dangerous viruses carried mainly by wild rodents. Humans usually get infected by inhaling contaminated dust from rodent urine, faeces or saliva, especially in enclosed spaces, cabins, barns, storage rooms or badly ventilated buildings with rodent activity. Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the mouth, nose or eyes can also be a route of infection. The current concern is linked to a cruise ship cluster in the South Atlantic. WHO reported a cluster of severe respiratory illness on a Dutch flagged cruise ship, with cases showing fever, gastrointestinal symptoms, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress and shock. As of the latest official ECDC assessment on 6 May 2026, 7 cases were reported, including 3 deaths, 1 critically ill patient and 1 case diagnosed after returning to Switzerland. ->The important detail is the Andes virus. Most hantaviruses do not spread from person to person. Andes virus is the exception: rare human to human transmission has been documented, but mainly after close and prolonged contact. This is not considered a Covid style or measles style airborne risk for the general public. Switzerland has confirmed 1 patient being treated at the University Hospital Zurich after returning from the cruise. The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health says it concerns Andes virus, that the patient was isolated, and that there is currently no danger to the Swiss public. The patient’s wife is asymptomatic and self isolating as a precaution. Symptoms usually begin like a bad flu: fever, headache, muscle pain, chills, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or abdominal pain. The dangerous phase is when it progresses suddenly into breathing problems, pneumonia, low blood pressure, shock and intensive care need. WHO says symptoms often appear 2 to 4 weeks after exposure, but can appear as early as 1 week and as late as 8 weeks. There is no licensed specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for hantavirus infection. Treatment is supportive: close monitoring, oxygen, intensive care, stabilising blood pressure and managing respiratory, cardiac or kidney complications. Early ICU level care improves survival in severe pulmonary cases. The real risk is not casual public contact. The real risk is rodent exposure, contaminated dust and, for Andes virus only, close prolonged contact with an infected person. Europe’s public risk from the cruise ship event is assessed as very low by ECDC, partly because Andes virus does not spread easily and its natural rodent reservoir is not present in Europe. Practical prevention is simple: avoid rodent droppings, do not dry sweep or vacuum contaminated areas, ventilate rooms first, wet contaminated surfaces with disinfectant before cleaning, wear gloves and a mask when cleaning risky areas, seal rodent entry points and store food securely. In short: Hantavirus is serious, but not easily contagious. Andes virus deserves attention because rare human to human transmission is possible, but the current official risk for Switzerland and Europe remains low.
