This New York Times piece is worth your time. Here’s what is happening, as simply as I can put it. Back in January, Trump sued the IRS, an agency he controls, demanding $10 billion over the leak of his tax returns a number of years ago. IRS lawyers did their jobs. They wrote a memo laying out the defenses that could beat the suit, including the fact that Trump filed too late. His own lawyer was in court when the leaker pleaded guilty in October 2023, more than two years before Trump sued. The Justice Department never showed up to court. Never argued back. Never used the defenses sitting on their desk. The judge got suspicious and ordered both sides to explain whether they were actually opposing each other or just colluding. The day before that brief was due, Trump dropped the suit. Same day, his Justice Department announced a $1.776 billion taxpayer-funded “anti-weaponization fund.”  Trump gets a formal apology. The IRS agrees to drop any audits of him and his family, even though a 2024 Times report found a loss in an ongoing audit could cost him over $100 million. The acting Attorney General, Trump’s former criminal defense attorney, picks the five commissioners who decide who gets paid. Trump can fire any of them. BREAKING: Former FBI Director James Comey just TORCHED Kash Patel for his disrespectful Pearl Harbor snorkel vacation — and gave him a lesson on how to behave on the job. Today, the Associated Press revealed that FBI Director Kash Patel happily snorkeled over the graves of 900 American sailors. That's not a metaphor. Patel (alias “J. Edgar Boozer”) — a man who has spent the past year jetting around the world on a government Gulfstream, partying in Olympic locker rooms, and handing out branded bourbon bottles — quietly arranged a "VIP snorkel" around the sunken USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor, where the remains of more than 900 sailors and Marines still rest on the ocean floor. The excursion was coordinated by military officials, kept out of FBI press releases, and revealed only through government emails obtained by the Associated Press. Patel had already visited Hawaii once on that trip. He came back for two more days — and nobody at the FBI will say what else he did there. The government jet then flew on to Las Vegas, Patel's adopted hometown. When CNN's Kasie Hunt asked former FBI Director James Comey whether he would have done any of this, the response was quietly devastating. "I visited the Pearl Harbor Memorial with the admiral in charge of the Pacific Command on a Navy boat," Comey said. "Never got in the water." Comey then explained what Patel apparently never learned: "When you're FBI director, you have a responsibility to represent not just yourself, but 38,000 people and an idea, an American idea that's respected around the world. You're always on duty, you're always being watched." On Patel's drinking? "You can't be [intoxicated] because you're always on. You don't get vacation because you're considered on the job 24-7 all the time. You can be asked to approve a FISA, to be involved in an operational decision." Marine veteran Hack Albertson, who dives the Arizona annually to monitor the wreck's condition, didn't mince words about Patel's snorkel tour: "It's like having a bachelor party at a church. It's hallowed ground. It needs to be treated with the solemnity it deserves." Meanwhile, family members of Pearl Harbor survivors — who have never been permitted to snorkel at the site themselves — learned their loved ones' tomb was used for a VIP recreational outing by a man who also gave New Zealand officials illegal 3D-printed guns and chugged beer on camera at the Olympics. Every outlet is running the “corrupted” quote. The detail they’re skipping is the one that makes this structurally irreversible. The decision of whether to prosecute Jack Smith for conducting a legitimate federal investigation now belongs to Todd Blanche. The acting attorney general who personally served as Trump’s lead defense lawyer in the cases Smith brought. The man who sat across the courtroom from Smith arguing Trump was innocent is now in charge of deciding whether Smith goes to prison for building those cases. There is no recusal discussion. No institutional firewall. Smith indicted Trump. Trump’s lawyer is now the charging authority over Smith. Smith also named something that deserves more than a passing mention. After an unarmed woman was shot and killed by an immigration agent during a street protest in Minnesota, Bondi and Patel did not order an investigation into the agent. They ordered federal agents to find links between the victim and left-wing domestic terrorist groups. A dead woman. They built a file on her. “I’ve never been in a Department of Justice that would be willing to be complicit in something like that,” Smith said. Federal judges have accused DOJ officials of dishonesty so many times since January 2025 that Smith said it had become “difficult to track.” Judges. In court filings. On the record. The DOJ spokeswoman’s full response to all of this: “I would expect nothing less from Jack Smith.”
