This is a pile of misunderstandings. First, Catholics do not say Mary saved herself apart from Christ. The Immaculate Conception means Mary was redeemed by Christ in a more perfect way: preserved from sin by the merits of her Son. A person can be saved by being pulled out of a pit, or saved by being prevented from falling into it. Mary was saved preventively by Christ. Second, the Catechism’s “cause of salvation” language comes from St. Irenaeus and means Mary’s obedient “yes” served God’s plan of redemption. It does not mean Mary is the efficient cause of salvation. Christ alone is Savior. Third, Mary’s title “Mediatrix” is explicitly subordinate to Christ. Catholic teaching says her role does not obscure or diminish Christ’s unique mediation, but depends entirely on it. Fourth, “Mary is not mentioned after the Ascension” is simply false. Acts 1:14 is after the Ascension, and Mary is there with the apostles in prayer before Pentecost. Mary’s role is not a rival to Christ. Her entire role is: “Do whatever He tells you.”

Mary had no role in the early church.
