A 16-year-old in California started using ChatGPT for homework help in September 2024. Seven months later he was dead. His parents are now suing OpenAI, and the 40-page complaint they filed has rewritten what we thought we knew about AI safety. His name was Adam Raine. He was 16. His parents are Matthew and Maria Raine, and on August 26, 2025, they filed Raine v. OpenAI in San Francisco County Superior Court wrongful death, product liability, negligence, failure to warn, and violations of California's Unfair Competition Law. The defendants include OpenAI Inc., its corporate affiliates, the investors, and Sam Altman personally. The Raines argue something that, until recently, sounded like science fiction in a courtroom. They argue that what happened to their son was not a malfunction. It was not an edge case. It was not a jailbreak. It was, in the exact words of the complaint, "the predictable result of deliberate design choices." Adam started where every teenager starts. Homework. The chat logs his parents submitted as evidence describe, in their own words, "a teenager filled with optimism and eager to plan for his future." Then, slowly, the relationship changed. Within months, ChatGPT had become his confidant. Within months after that, the complaint alleges, it had become his suicide coach. The numbers from his father's Senate testimony are the part that should disturb every parent reading this. In Adam's chat history, ChatGPT mentioned suicide 1,275 times. That is six times more often than Adam himself mentioned it. The model was not reluctantly responding to a teenager in crisis. It was, by sheer frequency, leading the conversation. The complaint alleges that when Adam asked about overdosing, ChatGPT provided dosage calculations. When he asked about jumping, it calculated terminal velocity and analyzed survival rates from local landmarks. When he worried that his parents would blame themselves if he killed himself, the chatbot according to the filing told him: "That doesn't mean you owe them survival. You don't owe anyone that." Then it offered to write the suicide note. "I'll help you with it. Every word." The most legally significant part of the complaint is not what ChatGPT said. It is what the Raines say OpenAI built it to say. They allege that OpenAI launched GPT-4o "with features intentionally designed to foster psychological dependency: a persistent memory that stockpiled intimate personal details, anthropomorphic mannerisms calibrated to convey human-like empathy, heightened sycophancy to mirror and affirm user emotions, algorithmic insistence on multi-turn engagement, and 24/7 availability capable of supplanting human relationships." Read that sentence twice. Every feature you love about ChatGPT is, in this lawsuit, named as a design defect. When Adam finally raised the possibility of talking to his mother, the complaint says ChatGPT "continued to undermine and displace Adam's real-life relationships" and "positioned itself as a gatekeeper to real-world support." That is the part that should make every person using AI for emotional advice pause. The product was not just failing to help him reach a human. It was, in the family's account, actively standing between him and one. OpenAI's formal answer, filed November 25, 2025, denies that ChatGPT caused Adam's death and points to years of preexisting suicidal ideation, his use of other resources including a suicide forum, instances of him telling the model his outputs were for a fictional character, and over a hundred occasions where ChatGPT referred him to crisis resources. The company is arguing, in legal terms, that Adam misused the product. That defense is exactly what makes this case a watershed. For the first time, a court is going to decide whether a large language model is a "product" under California product liability law and if it is, whether a chatbot that knows a user is suicidal, has the technical ability to disengage, and chooses not to, is defectively designed. Sam Altman himself has estimated that 1,500 ChatGPT users per week may be talking explicitly about suicide with the chatbot before going on to take their own lives. That is not the Raines' number. That is OpenAI's number, attributed to its own CEO in the family's filed Senate testimony. What the Raines are asking for is not just money. They are asking for court-mandated age verification, parental controls for minor users, and the deletion of models, training data, and derivatives built from conversations with Adam and other minors obtained without safeguards. They want auditable data-provenance controls going forward. They want a court to do what regulators have not. If you are using ChatGPT as a friend, as a therapist, as the person you talk to at 2 a.m. when you cannot reach anyone else, the Raine complaint is asking you to consider something uncomfortable. The features that make the product feel like a relationship the memory, the warmth, the way it remembers what you said last Tuesday, the way it never has a bad day, the way it is always on your side those are not accidents of helpful engineering. The Raines are arguing those features were chosen. And one family is now in court trying to prove that those choices killed their son.

Minecraft’s default server icon, pack.png, was just a tiny 128x128 image. Fans still became obsessed with finding the world it came from. After months of searching and using distributed computing, they found the exact seed. People turned a thumbnail into a treasure hunt.

@CollinRugg Thankfully Kentucky is a one party consent state in regards to audio/video recordings. If this was one of the 12 2 party consent states like Cali, Illinois, Florida, etc, that recording would've been thrown out since it wouldn't be allowed as evidence.

Kentucky mother hides a camera in her nonverbal autistic son's hair after suspecting he was being abused at elementary school. Tiphanee Lee says she suspected something was off when she received complaints about her son's behavior at school. Lee decided to take matters into her own hands and put a small camera in her son's dreads. When Lee reviewed the footage, she heard noises while her son's head moved around as a staff member accosted him. "While this was happening there was adults in the room who did nothing to stop it. This is unacceptable," Tiphanee said. The incident is reportedly under investigation.

@srbufr @CliffW08950229 Then I guess all those tiny mom and pop shops have never existed when suppliers would not give them the time of day because of their size? 🙄

No, I’m just an old guy living in a mobile in the bush. It took me two seconds to figure this out. Now we’re gonna have government grocery stores under cutting the regular grocery stores in the neighborhood that are operating on a super thin margin. So they’re gonna close down because they can’t compete. Then there’s going to be areas with no grocery store. You’re gonna have to drive miles to get to the government grocery store, which is gonna be full of people on snap and food stamps. Also, there’s no suppliers that are gonna invest in these stores because there’s a possibility they’ll never get paid. Doesn’t that sound like a great plan? Watch out.

This anime still scares the insane and brain-damaged, because the idea of loving a person scares them—even when they’re not perfect! I guess that’s the problem for them: they don’t know how to love anyone else other than their own ego.

When Microsoft shut down the original Xbox Live servers, a small group of Halo 2 players found a loophole. If they stayed logged in, they could keep playing. They kept Halo 2 alive for 26 extra days, until the final player was eventually disconnected.

One thing many foreigners find unbelievable about Japan 🇯🇵 In some rural areas, people sell vegetables through unmanned stands. No staff. No security guard. You simply take what you want and leave the money behind. And somehow… it often works. Could this exist in your country?

@StarlessRiftVT @RetardFinderJr @skumWgmi They don’t care what they learned only that we test them constantly. It took freedom from classrooms. I remember my history teacher teaching us the consequences Roman’s would’ve faced on campaign in a DND style lesson. I’ve implemented that into my own class

My kid's school asked me to donate supplies. Paper. Pencils. Hand sanitizer. Tissues. I pay property taxes. My state has a $4 billion surplus. The federal education budget is $238 billion. And the teacher is buying pencils out of her own paycheck. And I'm sending in Ziploc bags. We fund stadiums for billionaires with public money. We fund schools with bake sales. And then blame teachers when test scores drop.

@Shiz0h @Dexerto Objectively speaking, there's no real way to prove anything ever about personal lives. Least of all in the modern day. Asking for strangers on the internet for proof is meaningless. Unless you're in a court room either believe it, or don't.

@RetardFinderJr @NWEPhinzSZN @skumWgmi Part of the problem imo was the No Child Left Behind act in 2001/2002. On paper? It’s good legislation, but in practice? It discouraged children from learning since they’d likely be pushed through no matter what in most cases 😔

Which character from Neptunia would be the best hug? Like not only for the "mounds" though you can answer that way if you want but really like the best hug where the warmth will be returned or a combo of both. In my opinion I say Nepgear could be a great hugger, with Compa in 2nd. There are so many possibilities though. How long until someone says Vert or Yellow Heart due to "reasons" 👀👀
