If you're betting on your team to win, what inside knowledge do you have access to that the rest of us don't? YouTube exists, we can all watch game film. Every rumor, injury update etc.. is online.
Not to mention, you still have to actually go out and win.
It's like playing basketball and betting your buddy $5 that you can make a shot.
I'm not saying you should be betting on your team btw, but I reject the premise that it's like insider trading.

Whether he played or not, he has inside knowledge about injuries, game plans, etc. that the public doesn’t have. In the securities world that is insider trading and you go to prison for that. College sports are big business and EVERYONE knows that betting on your team is illegal. It has literally kept Pete Rose, one of the greatest baseball players ever, out of the Hall of Fame. I appreciate your tech fandom and no doubt other schools would be defending their guy if the shoe were on the other foot, but this is a bid deal and uncharted territory. We haven’t really ever had a story like this one and tech hasn’t handled this well. I would guess that if he was a 5th string WR they would have cut him immediately and not had a press conference about helping the kid, and his mental health, etc. But it’s their highly sought after transfer QB and they want to win…so they are willing to turn their heads. Let’s just call a spade a spade!
