An interesting thing about bears. During hibernation, bears develop insulin resistance--> which is essentially what we call Type 2 diabetes in humans. The rest of the body runs entirely on stored fat. When spring arrives, the insulin sensitivity switches back to normal, completely and without medication. So, this insulin resistance during hibernation is their adaptation to survive in food-scarce times. From a human lens, they go from diabetic to perfectly healthy again, on their own biological schedule. Scientists are actively studying how bears turn this mechanism on and off, and which genes are involved, hoping to find new ways to treat Type 2 diabetes in humans.
